Phase 2 of the the swap is underway! Drove the BD to work (for the last time), pulled it in after hours, and started pulling her apart.
Motor is 99% out. Didn't want to yank it and leave it on the floor overnight (would be in the way of the cleaning crew that scrubs our floors) but everything is disconnected. Only ran into one snag, the lower rear bolt on the A/C compressor. WTF Subaru!?!?
Oh, and I broke the flange on my midpipe. Had shitty welds to begin with. We finally have a welder at work so I'll have someone fix it for me today while I pull the motor, trans, and start the transplant into the wagon.
Hopefully I'll be driving the wagon home tonight!!!!!

The wobble wouldn't fit, so I took the oil filler neck out, and using an extension VERY CLOSE to the cam sensor I crakced it loose. Used a pry bar between the extension and the head to keep the ratchet from smacking the cam sensor.

It's DONE!!

Had the motor in the wagon by noon, but we couldn't get the trans to line up. Took me and a friend three tries and until 2:30 before it was in. Then I had issues with the pedals, the radiator, etc, etc, etc. Ugh. At the end I got buttoned up, swapped the radio, gave the car a wash, and drove it home. High idle and all. At 11PM last night
Never got a chance to ground out the pin in the PCM so the CEL is on for a trans code. Left the TCM in so I got a high idle (versus not having ABS), but will be taking care of that next time.
I have an issue with the clutch pedal sticking (takes a bit to come back up), but that's it. Runs great. Handles like a boat. Needs my WRX struts out of my sedan. That's next on the list.
I took pics but they're on my work camera. I'll be posting them somewhere on Tuesday.

Swapped the center console lid guts from my sedan to my wagon so I have A. the higher armrest and B. an armrest that isn't broken.
Made the best of both units. Now it has a good latch, AND stays open. Always had one or the other before.

TRIED to swap PCMs. Didn't turn out so well. CEL still on and now I can't even get in it with a scanner to see why.

Took some crap off the sedan.

Found the innards of the wagon's rearview mirror busted (no wonder it won't stay in one place), so swapped the sedan's.
Re-installed the wagon's PCM and grounded out pin 81 (black and red wire) with the wire from the sedan. NO MORE CEL!!!

Until....

I went to the original owner's house to pick up a rear headrest and cargo cover that were missing when he sold it to me. Free stuff rules!

did that whole snorkus delete. never noticed how easily angered I can get at things. The bolt inside the engine bay was simple. the bolt behind the foglight was a pain. tried removing the foglight to get at it but the screw were rusted and stripped, couldn't get to the screw for the very front of the splashguard so I had to try to hold it out of the way and cram my other hand in there to get to the bolt. ratchet would only go a click or two so it took forever.

Anywho I'm really glad I did this. I love having the low end torque. my car no longer stutters when starting in first gear and through 2nd as well. above 3500 rpms it has a great sound, especially in 3rd

Found out that over the last 2 weeks, while I used my brothers SE-R SpecV, my mom and brother obliterated my rear polk speakers, and tossed and tumbled everything in my trunk.

Also have a terrible feeling my driver rear strut is blown. =[

Quick question. I'm running 04STi suspension all around. With the driver rear blown, would a viable option be to use MY97 Legacy/GC8 specific AGX's with different springs for the rear only? Or shall I just keep a lookout for 04STi rear struts to replace them?

Say...2 sets selling in both Hartford and Boston. =\ I don't want to spend a ton of money on this car anymore. What's better cost-efficient/right choice.

Tracked down to what I think has been causing my squealing when the engine is fully warmed up: A/C idler pulley. At it least when I removed it the bearings where loose and could easily hear them jiggle around in the carrier.

Last night pulled the side skirts pending a sale and the rear interior out of the BD. HOLY FUDGE those lower seat belt bolts were rusted in there. It's all out now. All gutted behind the front seats save for the headliner and carpet. Pulled all the door panels too.
Pulled some more stuff today pending sales....

Cleaned the interior of the wagoon FINALLY. Yuck. Soda EVERYWHERE. Driver's floor mat is TOAST. Was able to save the other three with some carpet cleaner foam and then a good scrubbing, followed up by a steam cleaning. Got more work to do but it's alot cleaner than it was. Even pulled the driver seat out of the car to get at all the crap. WHY did Subaru make the inside seat rail the perfect place to drop all kinds of coins and debris? Found like $3 in there, plus some unopened gum. Didn't eat it. Or the little choclate egg I found under the back seat. :smt016

That was done with markers only. the 6 in the tach is a pain though due to location of the bulb. i have 3 layers of masking tape blocking it.
I mainly just followed this DIY (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=1123) minus i did not swap out the bulbs and the barriers under the cluster faces i only reduced to half the hight with no reflective tape added

Still here..

Replaced my radiator with a Spectra Premium radiator. I abandoned the GC8 radiator idea because this is my only car and the down time was unacceptable. I needed something fast and had no time to research and fabricate things. A man has to drive to work and gigs.

Easy job, took about 30 minutes probably less to pull the old one and swap it.
In the meantime I ordered and received my slim electric fans. Problem is that the wiring harness is a two wire and the car is a three wire. The fans have a blue and a black wire. The car has two multicolor wires and a black wire. Duh on the black wires, not sure what to make of what wires go where after that.

Oh.. the kicker about the slim fans is that I lose the mount for the coolant overflow tank. You guys with slim fans, what do you do about that?

still all over the place wheather to get cheapo coilovers or get really good adjusting struts/springs.

When you buy quality, you buy quality. Quality doesn't necessarily = costly though. If you cheap out on stuff just to get "the look", you'll look ridiculous when it breaks.

Not my car, but I attempted to replace the brakes on my friend's BH. She said her pedal was going to the floor and the brakes were grinding badly. So she dropped the $200 for parts and I attempted the install. I took off the driver's side front tire and noticed a steady leak of brake fluid coming from the caliper. I popped the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir...bone dry. Assuming there's now air in the lines, and I'm not sure of the leak location, I told her it was beyond me and that she needs to have the car towed to get fixed. When looking under the car, there was a lot of oil that looked like it was coming from a rubber boot dripping on the left aide of the header. Her rear struts are also shot.

I thought about something similar but I want to be able to remove them if need be without removing the bumper and making a further mess of the bracket. I might cut off the bolt in back and have a friend weld on a new one

Yeah they are my favourites on the BKs too - what tires are you running? They didn't decrease performance for me when the alignment is correct...

I actually noticed a small performance handicap moving from the 14" stock alloys, with snow tires (185/70) to the 16" 99 RS wheels with A/S tires (205/55), but I attribute that more with the larger diameter than the heavier wheel/tire combo (which I haven't actually measured, to be fair.)

Bigger != better in some cases.

My recent stainless steel hydraulic clutch hose broke. Yes.. broke. The rubber central core which I didn't know was so cheap.. separated from the collar and dumped all my hydraulic fluid. Never again - eBay nobrand SS clutch hoses.
Ordered an OEM version and installed it only to find out that my master cylinder is pushing far less volume. Something to do with the seals in the push-rod. It's an original part in the 98 so I ordered a new master cylinder because I'm tired of dealing with it. At some point soon this car isn't going to have a single stock mechanical part left.. but hey.. the that's the love and pain of an older car.
Fix this.. something else goes out. Replace that.. something else goes out.

This on the heels of replacing my radiator which is working well still.

The FHI tower bar is a direct bolt on with no major modification. I have never seen a GD FHI carbon fiber bar only ones from the JDM GC's

It fit, but it touched the lip just underneath where the wipers are. It also touched the cruise vacuum actuator until I bent it. The killer was that I couldn't close the hood. If I had a GT/Outback hood with scoop I suspect it would have fit. I didn't have a problem with the tower bracket, as I just bent it out of the way.

I went on a 800 round trip road trip in the Subaru. On the way to Dallas my car performed awesome. Perfect.. like my months of killing myself and my wallet finally amounted to something. Twisty country roads, major highway runs, a little gravel action.. everything was great.

Then on the way back I noticed my power steering went out. Thirty minutes later my battery warning light went on. Then the car went nuts and all electrical support went dead. The ran like shit and I struggled into a parking lot of a gas station.
My Leggy stranded in Tyler Texas in the middle of the night.

The bolt holding the alternator to the belt tensioner sheared in half. Turns out, it's not even the correct bolt, looks nothing like what I've been seeing in the rest of the car.

See? That's the problem. I bought this car third hand, seized and in bad shape except for the body. It's been a smorgasbord of missing bolts, bad maintenance and bad procedures. Lovingly I brought it back to life and every now and then.. something breaks.
The more I supe' up the car, the more things go wrong..

I'm not shitting around when I said eventually there will be no stock parts.

Using some bungie cords and some hose clamps I McGuyver'ed the alternator tensioner where I wanted it to be. Jump started my car by good Samaritan and went on my way.
Made it 200 miles back to home without incident.

The belt is chipped up so that's going. I figured if I'm going through all the trouble of freeing a sheared bolt.. and since I got the alternator out of the car.. I might as well put a Napa replacement in and that'll be the last time I'll worry about that thing.

Anyways, that was last night. Before that on Sunday I took a trip to Road America and the car did perfect, A/C blowing the whole time, loaded up with the wife and kids and picnicing stuffs. Although not having cruise and the drone at 75MPH with group N trans mount/pitch stop got annoying.
Today I came home, changed clothes, and headed to my in-laws to replace an alternator on Nana's Focus and the damn wagon overheated. Pushed the coolant out of the rad and into the bottle (and then out of the bottle) like it did in my BD a couple times. WTF?
Dumped the bottle back into the rad after I let the air bleed off and it was fine. Burped it and refilled it when I got home. Maybe I put too much in when I swapped the motor and had an air pocket that FINALLY came out? Who knows. Coolant is clean, no oil, no bubbles when its running.

FINALLY did a snorkusectomy on the wagoon, and installed my junkyard freebie intake:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2009/06/img_0257-1.jpg

Funny thing it, it doesn't make a LOT more noise than stock, just a little, and there's no WHOOOOOO sound like my BD had with the snorkus gone but the stock intake resonator in place.

I got my clear side markers today and put those on along with my Crucial Racing HID kits (H1/H3) and I'm in the process of cooking my headlights now to flip the light pattern plate for USDM as I'm sure the 5000K brightness will begin to annoy/distract oncoming traffic. Should be a blast!

Ultimate fail, thats what I did today

was supposed to be a big install day for me.

Whiteline RSB, both bushing bolts rounded and were corroded to death, Endlink bolts looked fine. Thought about taking the entire bushing bracket off, successfully shearing off one bolt and scaring me to death that I wouldn't be able to repair it. WHAT DO I DO ABOUT THAT.

Got my Paranoid Fab. Alien Embryo Exhaust Hangars. Removed the stock hangers from the muffler bumper exit successfully, went for the third and thought I was successful until the rusted bracket holding it to the rear frame came along with it. I now only have 3 exhaust hangers. I was gonna do the last one at the midpipe. But I was freaked out that it was gonna break off too. Got the first two on successfully. They're green... and a bitch to get on.

Went to do the install on my Borla Replica's, and got off EVERY bolt off successfully, until the last one on the cat section. One came off at the cost of a brutally cut knee, but the other one wasn't happening, with the result being a terrible rounded bolt. WHAT DO I DO ABOUT THAT. Cut the sucker off?

blah.

I'm tired, sore, and wanna stab my car. I wanna just bring it to a shop or dealership to fix the problems. Best option? Try to find a suitable point to weld on a new exhaust hangar? drill out the sheared bolt and tap and thread? Cut that cat bolt off? blahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Took my 2 out of 3 peeling roof rack rails off and the rusty rear wiper arm, re-painted them all sexy matte black. Swapped the corroded passenger side wiper arm to a non-corroded one from the BD.

Planning to do more swappage this weekend, plus I need to touch up all the stone chips on the hood and roof (?) that are starting to rust :smt022

Make it all pretty for the parade next Saturday :smt023

for example once a red tahoe got behind me and lit up like a xmas tree. i called 911 and had them confirm it was an actual cop before i pulled over. i suggest everyone here does the same.

oh yea my new front end will be here today. and i might have some new stuff as well. il take pics.

speaking about lighting up...

I think it's becoming a hazard.. I was in CT when they do road work they have what seemed to be that I founded near 10 super bright red/blue lights flashing Do you really need that much going on at once? God forbid they come flying up from nowhere behind you and can't see shit in all 3 mirrors because of that...

i replaced my alt/ps belt, it was split!

i also repainted the belt cover flat black along with the PS pulley and a bracket that holds a vacuum sensor on the left strut tower

and repainted the area right under the condenser flat black so it isn't all speckled when you see it through the bumper and added mesh to the two big openings of the JDM bumper to protect the brand new condenser i ordered

they are super bright because of dumbasses that are either blind or def from their stereo or in car tv or phones. the brighter the safer.. and they even have a new whurr rumbler siren or sumthing like that. that penetrates sound proofing and is more prone to be heard over a loud car stereo. youtube it. (type in police tahoe and find the vid that has a black tahoe and a sound warning.) il link it in a bit.

youll be able to see my car lit up from a damn plane... im spending close to $300 on leds and a second battery. just installed my code 3 horn.. (that buzzer sound cop cars make)

and i did some more stripping today of my interior.. pm me if you need wagon panels and pillar covers.

There is a reason people put a lot of lights in their vehicles. I can't tell you how frustrating it is when people don't yield to me like they're supposed to. I can't legally over take them either. There could be someones life in the balance and because you're too ignorant to get out of my way it's going to take me longer to do my job.

Oh and $300 is nothing for lights. That's just one of my Slimlighters. I've put over $1000 into my car between lights and the siren. But it's all about saftey for me

Not a lot of states allow personal-use vehicles to be mounted with lights and sirens, even for first responders. Maybe those two are from states that don't. I know NY and MI don't so whoever I see with those lights are running an illegal setup for one thing.

Anyway, got a new (to me) the trunk carpet. Too much trouble to clean all the rust, oil, coolant, etc stains on the old one

DOOOO EEEETT!!!!! :smt023

AFAIK only one other 2nd gen Legacy will be there from the internets. WE NEED MORE OF US!

It's only a two hour drive for me, a bunch of WI guys are meeting up near my house and leaving at 6AM to get down there at 8 for registration. So I gotta be up at.... 4:30ish?

In other news, I swapped the seat cushion from my passenger wagon seat to the driver's side 2.5GT seat to get rid of the saggyness, then swapped the 2.5GT seats (mmmmmm LEATHER) into my wagon. But I kept the non-height adjustable seat track from the L since the 2.5GT's was loose and I never used the height adjustment anyways. Also swapped front door panels. So I have a two toned interior! 2.5GT in the front, L in the back. :smt017
It's not a DIRECT swap, but so damn close, and it's nice to have an almost unused seat. It's all firm, and I sit all high up now....

Yeah the proper way to do it from here is drive up Friday night and spend the night - there are a bunch of people from STL caravaning up there and leaving at 3:30am - crazy!

It's all about the two-toned interior - I have black GC8 seats against my lighter L interior, hehe.

Again, not to the OB, but I flattened one of the BMW's front tires somehow, I need to take it in and get it fixed. I don't like running three 17" rims and one 15".

I think I got about four tones, not counting the rear seats/door cards...

Get a good traffic lawyer. The car description doesn't mean squat, I've seen all sorts of stuff like "Subaru Legend" on tickets.

my wifes altima got pulled over(wrecked and bought legacy= )) the officer gave us a ticket and said the car was purple. it was silver. i never figured that one out. but it cost $170 for going over some white lines in the road

as for what ive done to my car, nothing on the subaru, but i put an MAD system i had laying around onto my nissan quest minivan, and removed all the intake silencers :smt026

Just go to...ah shit, what is that trial called where you plead guilty and get like, half of your ticket taken off? In WA, it's an option to check on the back of the ticket. I should know this one, I just had to do that, like, a month ago.

and if the cop doesn't show up, the case will be thrown out completely, so if you have a chance to fight it, take it...
