Well my car is running but the inspection is up and I doubt it will pass. I'm going to be doing a high compression build and put in a second HFC. After my little girls graduation from pre k im going to my garage and going to degrease the 25 block and have it ready to receive parts.

My car runs, I just need to get the brakes done. I just haven't had time to tackle replacing all the lines and installing my new calipers. And when I parked it and jacked it up, I stupidly left the ebrake engaged. Now it's seized to the rear rotor. AAAAAARGH.

Tested voltage to the COOLANT. 0.05-0.07 volts off, 0.1 volts on with ALL accessories on. This can cause electrolysis that will result in corrosion, and this is said to be the cause of many Subarus head gasket issues (http://allwheeldriveauto.com/subaru-head-gasket-problems-explained/). This is the result of, among other things, poor grounding (I have a grounding kit). Sources say (http://www.awrracing.com/media/electrolysis.pdf) aluminum engine health can be at risk at 0.15 volts and above. I see now why the use of distilled water is important.

Last night I thought I blew my engine... kinda sounded like a rod bearing or something. started ticking...then knocking.. I was so pissed... especially since i was on the other side of town lol but I drove it home anyways. Got it home and was thinking of other possibilities and thought to check the torque converter bolts. sure shit, one was loose, and another one was like half way out and bent. tightened the one, took out and replaced the other one, good to go! :) new tires tomorrow.

Painted my hood scoop black since it's been out of my car for months now. It'll go back in tomorrow with the 3m trim tape I bought since all the hardware is missing.
Tightened my power steering line that was loose and dripping fluid on my front cat converter. Found that the old leak I patched with JB Weld 2 step developed a slight weep. So I'm going to back tomorrow morning and sand it up and throw on this Quick-Steel epoxy to fix it. If this doesn't do it, I'm going to have to remove that whole length of power steering pipe and find a place to make me a new one. Which I probably should have done in the first place.
Bought the last silicone connector I need to convert my SRI to a CAI using my existing Cosmo SRI and a piece cut off the messed up "scratch and dent sale" OBX CAI. Sure it was 10 dollars free shipping, but it's missing all the bungs for the air connections and looking back at the auction, this was a non returnable item since it was considered "damaged". Fuck it.
I like fabricating stuff. At least the twisty end that snakes down the fender well is perfect shape. I'll just measure and cut a section from the MAF to the fenderwell. I might use the remaining pieces to fabricate brackets.
Has anyone ever considered painting their wagon back wing black, despite it not being the color of the car? Just curious. I was playing Forza 3 and I forgot what car it was, like a Renault or something, I painted the whole car green and it had a high back wing like our car GT's and I painted it black.. looked cool.
I might need to photoshop the idea first though.

Dropped my exhaust completely, ground down the welds and painted high temp black. Replaced exhaust gaskets and fixed everything about the exhaust. After the long battle it sounds AMAZING! Sound clip up tomorrow in my rides thread. Had no idea my car could sound this good! Had to take a drive tonight and make some noise. :)

From the outside it doesnt look any different.. Its just that little lip (especially on the rear wheel wells) is like bent up instead of sticking straight out where it will rub on my tire when I corner. I can take pics tommorow if ya still want..

My hood scoop fell off my car while going down the highway and burst into pieces behind me. It didn't have any hardware to hold it on. The hardware was all lost when I got the car. I had repainted it and used 3M Automotive trim tape to hold it in place. Guess I didn't use enough because at 80mph, it shuddered for a second and then blew off and over my car.
Not exactly sure what I'm going to do to replace it. I looked on eBay and saw a shit ton of "JDM" scoops. Not sure what would actually apply to my car since the back of the hood "hole" is higher than the front.

Doesn't rod knock only last a little while before the engine's toast? Low oil would cause valvetrain noise.

Can't be Flywheel because it's Auto.
It's definitely not valve noise, its way too loud.
What ever it is, it isn't good. I've burnt through a quart of oil in less then a week (Yes I'm 100% sure it's not leaking), and I've lost a TON of power throughout the power band.

Go get a smoke or pressure test done to see if pressure is escaping anywhere like into the gas tank... Cheap test that should determine if you're b0rk3d or not. :(

Pretty much borked any way I look at it, I can't afford to throw any money at it trying to figure out whats wrong. I'm already going to have to take out a loan to be able to swap it, I'd rather just do it and get it over with. if color doesnt matter, ill definately be able to get you one saturday night. if that works for you..? but let me know what color and if I see one that color, ill grab that one. and ill give ya the hardware too so ya dont have to worry about losing it again lol
You sir are the man. My car is green. Black would be an easy secondary choice. If there is no black or green, then whatever color because I'm going to have to prime and paint it black since I'll never match that green.
Let me know what happens.
I ordered a neutral safety switch since that has been popping a CEL lately while driving causing the engine to slightly stumble and when that happens, then I also get the cylinder misfire codes. Always in that order. NSS first, then two misfires and different cylinders, never the same ones.
Got to hand it to this car, everything is pretty straight forward to figure out.

Converted my Cosmo SRI into a CAI using a bit of that OBX CAI that was obviously not meant for my car and I couldn't return. Thank God it was cheap and the shipping was free. Ended up sawing off like a 9 inch section of the messed up CAI and used the second piece of it to attach to my Cosmo SRI. Autozone now carries rubber connectors and they work nicely.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/06/intake1-1.jpg
This is the view from inside the fender. Didn't have to take the wheel off, but I did have to take the splash shield off. Yes, that's a K&N cone filter.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/06/intake2-1.jpg
Also, fixed my power steering. I unscrewed the pipe from the junction and used a small pipe / tube cutter to cut the pipe off at the break. I ground down with a dremel the jagged bits and I sanded off the failed JB weld and Epoxy Fast Weld. I connected both pipes with a 7mm brass compression fitting, tightened them up and they're good for 5000 PSI. Put fluid back in, test drove the car, all is normal.
I may have to physically remove my factory fog lights so more air can feed into where the filter is. It's right behind the fog light. I can get some big rally type lights and move them closer inwards later.

Looks good! Do you plan on leaving the splash guard off? Unless you plan on driving in seriously dry conditions ALWAYS I would highly recommend you putting it back on. It'll definitely take some adjustment(s) but it's worth it. Also, look into getting a filter sock. The water beads off of it and it's pretty much a must in our case when you know the filter is exposed to the elements.

Neh. I wouldn't even worry about it. All you're looking for is nice, cool air which you'll be getting down there for sure. Exposing the filter even more will only lead to a quicker replacement due to debris damage and such. Now, if you piped something from the fog hole to the filter (which was enclosed somehow) then you'd be in business with a decent forced-air intake. That'd be something. :)

The bolt on the lower front corner, the screw on the top above the tire and the one on the back of the fender stayed in place and still has plastic shreds around them. All the plastic pop rivets are gone. Not exactly sure how this could even happen since the main hardware stayed behind. Oh well.

Thinking back on the 2 years I've had this insane project of a car, I recall plowing through some high water. I think that bowed that flap on the fender liner that extends to the bumper skirt. I remember it looking warped when I was under there threading the filter in. I guess with the fog light out, that was all it took to add some air pressure, blowing the flap down and causing me to run over my own fender liner on the highway.
Good news is that I found a reseller on ebay that has Legacy 96-99 fender liners on both sides for 45 bucks, free shipping.
So I bought one.
At least I still have the hardware, it's still attached to the car. This time I'm going to add extra hardware or fab up anything to make it stronger so that crap doesn't happen again.
Even if that means I'm going to cut some aluminum strips and pop rivet some bracings on that stupid flap.
In other news, I bought online a K&N drycharger prefilter. Water resistant, not water proof but allows airflow and it fits my cone filter. Consider this extra piece of mind having the filter right up there behind the fog light socket.

Shopping for suspension for my 98 GT... Found some cheap H&R springs, anyone know anything about them? Also thinking about Tokico 5 ways and maybe some camber plates.... I'm sick of body roll when I'm hulling ass...
Was thinking about full coil over, but I cant find any less then 1K... $1300 was the cheapest and I dont have even close to that much funds to spend.. :/

H&R is the way to go... Get swaybars if you want a compliant ride with much less body roll. Coils will punch a hole in your kidney.

Everyone was saying the Tein suck, and I figured H&R should be good. I have a 01 GT bar (21mm I think) in the front, but nothing in the rear.
Any word on struts? I have some beat KYB GR2's. A friend that builds race cars says GR2's are great, but AGX's suck and said something about Tokico 5 ways.. I had those on my Silvia and loved them! Then again, I had Tein springs on my Silvia and loved them too! haha

You could do the Koni insert mod on your KYB's - you buy Koni adjustable inserts, cut the end off your strut, slide them in and hey presto - adjustable Konis. H&R springs, Koni inserts, and a nice 22mm Whiteline or GC Impreza takeoff rear sway bar (if you don't mind hammering flat the hump under your spare tire) will make for a very nice handling car.

No, you cut the bottom off - about 1-2" and then you slide the insert in. It works a bit like a drywall anchor for a screw.
The wheels are Baja wheels. OEM, 16x6.5" ET55 so they fit just fine over the 04 GT brakes I have on the car. They have a really nice gunmetal type finish on them.

Okin, you and I have to get together and hang out some time. I think we'd split our sides laughing!
I have blue Techna Fit lines to go in. My pads are Hawk HPS, nothing major but they work well and heat up quick.
And yeah, speaker wire. It's all I have lying around right now and it's actually pretty decent gauge - it's the same as the stock wiring for the sidelights and it's actually got more insulation on it. It's not ideal but my car's been on stands for 3 months and I think I've forgotten how to change gears!!

Love the gauges, i think I'm going to copy them. And as for the rs bumper on a Lego some one did that local to me, it looks sick :D just don't try putting a legacy bumper on an rs it looks goofy as hell ( been there done that and got the tee shirt )
Tore into all the wires under the steering wheel to try to figure out my electrical problem.
15A fuse for "E/G IGN" keeps blowing. Fuel pump has been replaced, checked the bundle of wires at the ECU, going after the fuel pump relay next. Looks like it's one of the ones way up in there that's hard to get to, and I can't figure out which one it is. Guess I'll buy one first, maybe that'll help narrow it down?
Poking around in the FSM it looks like the ignition coil is in the same No. 16 fuse - so I replaced it with an old coil pack and the fuse quit blowing  Car won't stay running at idle though - wonder if it's just the old coil pack now or what...
Doh, spoke too soon - fuse just finally blew again. Back to the drawing board...

I have a pep boys and autozone that both have that tap in stock on and off, sometimes theres a set of multiple metric taps and dies in autozone that has it in there. Theyre cheap quality in the set but that helps keep the cost to about 20 bucks and they work fine for normal occasional use.

Got my splash guard / plastic fender well inside piece from ebay for the front passenger side of my car. Went to go test fit.. that works, same part. Started gathering hardware and realized I can't install it until my K&N prefilter sock arrives on Tuesday. I guess I could install it but I'd have to take it right out again to get to the K&N cone filter which is sitting behind the passenger side fog lamp.
I noticed a few things:
My car was not running when I got it and the I took out what's left of the snorkus airbox before the car ran.
With a SRI and the hood scoop blocked off the car ran one bar above halfway on the temp gauge.
With the SRI and the hood scoop opened, the car ran 2 bars below halfway.
With the CAI instead of a SRI and the foglight taken out, the car runs 4 bars below halfway.
Car sounds the same except that harsh gasp sound when I hit the gas is gone now that I'm on a CAI. Maybe I just can't hear it because the inlet is so far away from me.
I have no earthly idea if this makes a difference in the car's performance since I have no baseline to judge from. Plus with my lightweight pulley and flywheel, that alone makes such a difference I can't feel anything that could cause I minor change.
At the risk of an occasional "false random cylinder misfire CEL" that had to be the best mod ever.
EDIT:
My car has a minor coolant leak at the back of the engine. I just see a few drops of coolant under my car every now and then towards the rear of the engine bay. Heater hose or the cross hoses for the IACM probably.

I kind of figured that out since I've spent time with the car. I guess it's good to know it does a little more than just "nothing / alive / nuclear".
The gauge did manage to reflect the changes I made which is good news.
When I had the bad ideal to use those cheap slim fans, it did settle up to show the temperature about 3/4's of the way to to the top and just stay there until I switched back to the stock fans.
I mean I have no idea what the actual temperature is and how accurate that gauge moves in relation to the temperature but it is capable of pointing at other positions other than 6, 9 and 12 oclock.

depending on the offset of your wheel, the inside of the rim might hit the sway on full turn on the steering. mine still hits with a +20 offset but barely.
also you'll need to put a washer/spacer between the jackpoint and the steering rack, since the sway is much bigger

That reminds me, the original owner of my car.. I'm the 3rd owner, had the front windows tinted and the passenger side is peeling right off. Need to scrape it all off and have it done the right way.
Today, I put my K&N dry filter sock on my cone filter.
I cut some hoses and made some rub guards for my CAI where it passes through the fender wall. I noticed that it's been bouncing off the edge and it's starting to form a line across the CAI pipe. So... I made guards to stop that.
I installed the passenger front fender splash liner that I ordered. It actually fit and only one mount hole was not aligned right.
I put my passenger fog light back in and I drove my car around testing everything. Apparently the fog light in front of the air filter makes no difference to the car. Temps and performance was exactly the same.

I really miss my SDR's worst decision ever selling them. I am gonna pick up a new set sometime but am getting some different 17's to last me until then. I really wish they sold the SDR's in a 17x7.75 or a 17x8
yeah im lucky i was able to get a set. I've loved them ever since i saw them on xcntrx's car. There were a couple sets on nasioc for sale, in the mid-atlantic section i believe.
Edit: here's the link to the set for sale i was talking about

Well instead of selling all my legacy stuff to buy an RS, I bought another BD!
97' L 5spd with a blown motor and almost no rust. Hard to pass on for $300.

Pulled the motor today, It took me just under 3 hours from opening the hood to hoisting the engine out. Way faster than the first time. I want to have the cam's on their way by monday if I can find the time to get them out otherwise they will be shipped on tuesday for sure. And i'm trying to decide if I should get the heads checked out or not. The engine never overheated but it would be good for peace of mind and I heard that the MLS gaskets like a smooth flat surface. I'll have to call and get pricing but i'm already spending more on this project than I wanted to.
Also does an ACT lightweight flywheel from an 02 WRX fit my legacy? I just saw it on craigslist and was just going to look it up but it would be so much easier if someone would just tell me.

No, sir. It will not work (as far as all my knowledge extends... Whatever that may mean.) All turbo EJ engines use a pull style clutch/flywheel and the EJ N/A's use a push style. Unless there is a way to convert your entire setup to pull, I would say to avoid the flywheel. Sorry.

OK thanks for confirming that. I looked it up and they were different part numbers so i figured. Hey at least it saves me from spending another $50.

Yeah, I'm either going to be putting my GT hood on this one, or cutting my extra Wrx scoop in, haven't decided which yet.
The 78' firebird in back was gonna be an epic project involving a turbo 6.0 and a 4l80e with paddle shifters...but I don't have the time/money/motivation for it, so it's going back on craigslist soon

Thought I would post the EGR parts I replaced...
These are all the parts I changed out. My EGR valve was still good, but it was dirty as hell. The big pipe was 30% plugged, the round vacuum thingy (always forget the name) seemed ok but I still chnged it out. The real problem was the little dohicky with the rubber line on it. It was plugged solid! It sits right under the round thing... haha... Anyway, Light is still off and it's been about 4 days of driving... All the parts are used from an old Forester intake I had sitting around. All the same part numbers...

The SVX I was gonna buy got sold out from under me( at a 3rd what I was gonna pay, doesn't make any sense) so I'm putting a spare 2.2 in it for now, and then I'm probably gonna throw one of the sets of 22t heads on a different 22e block and run that for a while until another eg33 falls into my lap. I have everything to throw a 2.2L turbo in this thing for the price of a few gaskets, so I might as well haha. I'll probably put my Wrx tranny in it too, we'll see.

Went out last night at 10pm and had the motor read to pull by 11 on the "new" L. Its so quick and easy without a turbo to deal with haha. I am definitely going to be keeping the L as the nice car, this thing is awesomely clean all around, so I'll be putting the STI suspension, 05' LGT 5spokes, JDM front and GT shirts/ rear bumper on this one.
Now the real question is should I leave it blue and just repainting the GT parts? Or should I repaint the whole car white? Hmmm

installed 5k HIDs while @ the meet I got from redline, then installed the fogs yesterday but need to replace the bulbs cuz one of them didnt work.
Going to take care of that tomorrow then see if installing the EGR i got from reason and see if that solves my CEL issue, if not then im gonna put the blame on the bad exhaust and hope when the new one gets installed that the issue gets resolved

^ Hey wassup MR, Nice looking exhaust. Any sound clips? Did you reuse the same midpipe and resonater?
Or did you have the shop fabricate a midpipe for you? What is the diameter of the midpipe, 2.5"?
It looks sweet!

Its a weird midpipe....I used my 3'' mid pipe from the old wrx fart cannon exhaust, one part is 2.5 a small part is 3'' and the rest is 2.5. Reason is, is because the original midpipe was going to hit the rear control arm, so we had to shorten it which in the end got rid of 90% of the 3'' section. Anyways, its not that rumbly honestly. I was kind of disappointed. Im sure once I fix the leak at the header and cat, it will make it a little more, but its rather quiet. Wish I knew a way to make it a little more louder... :(
But all in all im pleased. At least it wont anger the cops. :D

How many cats & resonators do you have? My BK has the two stock cats and a custom tube resonator in a 2.5" midpipe going into a stock STi axleback, with Borla headers. It rumbles and pops and roars at WOT.

I just have the cat after the header, then one resonator. I just wanted rumble when driving not just wot. lol But we'll see how it sounds when the leak is fixed
