seafoam'd via PCV line, gonna add the rest to gas and oil this weekend before i do an oil change. Looked at my rear rims and noticed that suddenly there are a ton of little cracks in the black paint....think the culprit was the wheel cleaner I used, Debating if im gonna repaint them or just find a way to acetone the whole set and bring them back to silver.

In the near future picking up some caliper paint and spraying the calipers, and also getting rid of the fake wood interior.

I FINALLY got to do something for myself today! The last week and weekend sucked balls! After everyone left, I decided to install my tweeters in my BD, I grabbed from my parts car. And then I got productive and installed my new projectors! :D

Got a set of JDM outer tails and an unnamed air intake pipe.

Both have yet to be installed.
One of the taillights needed resealed and dried out after all the nasty weather we have had lately.
Needs to get new hoses and fittings for the intake. It came with yellow and thats not going under my hood. Got an extra MAF with it. Yay for extra parts.

The short story:
Last week I was heading to band practice outside of town. I hit a huge pothole in a train crossing that I was unfamiliar with, I was doing around 60. Back Right tire went flat immediately. I put a spare on and went on. Over the next few days, the front tires kept deflating from 30 pounds to 10 every day. I have a small 12v compressor, I'd air them up, next morning flat.

Aired everything up and went to Discount Tire where I have an account with them and I bought my Falkens there and they're under road hazard coverage.

Back right rim is cracked all the way through.
F-R has a small crack on the back lip that goes under the tire.
F-L has a cracked lip.

I now have 3 cracked rims and 4 good tires. I was livid!

I don't have a lot of money to spend right now. I needed new rims, my state inspection is up tomorrow and I need my car.
Discount had a sale on rims.. and I had to choose the lesser of the evils:

Bummer! Doesn't your state/county have insurance for this sort of thing? Every time a pothole or something city maintained does damage, the city should pay for it. I would call around or look online for a way to be reimbursed for your losses...

I've been looking around. The hole was out of city limits but on a county road. But it's in a train crossing grade so that could make it a state or possibly a federal issue depending on which train track it is. I live in Beaumont TX, it's a major port city so theres tons of train tracks everywhere.
I've heard of people complaining to the city and winning damages reimbursed for pot hole damage in the city. That seems like an easy deal to contend with. But.. trying to go submit my gripe to the county.. or worse, the state.. may be an endless set of hurdles to go through.
Shit, I work for the federal government I know how hard it is to push something through the system the higher the originating office is.

If I have to set up something through work that involves the city, I can have it done by the close of business. If it's a state thing I'm working on.. at least a month. Trying to get something done in Washington DC.. forget it.

Still have an annoying bogging issue below 2000RPM. Seems to happen right after oil changes (weird) or when it rains/is damp out/I drive through big puddles. I've done both since Saturday.
I assumed it was my shitty plug wires because I've gotten misfire codes, and two wires had rub marks on them and I swear I saw them arc once. So I replaced them with new NGK wires. Pretty blue!
Considering unplugging EVERYTHING, cleaning all the connectors, and adding some dielectric grease to seal out moisture. It's GOT to be a moisture issue..... cant think of why it happens after oil changes.

Did you remove your snorkus? If so, that's the reason. See here (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1471819). Doing a grounding kit can help a fair amount if it's poor spark voltage, so can boosting the alternator output (http://www.scoobymods.com/raise-your-alternator-voltage-t10547.html). Your NGK wires could support an upgrader coil pack too, which a lot of people like to do (I might myself soon); link 1 (http://www.sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=11704), link 2 (http://www.sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=5195).

Thanks. The more I look at it, the more I think I need to lower the car. It looks a little tall sitting on those rims.
Oh and I completely forgot to mention that I have only liability insurance on the Subaru. I'll be honest, it sits around not working more than it is working, we figured to just keep the insurance to the minimum on it.
Besides, at one point we have full coverage on both our cars and we had a 500 deductible. The total cost of my rims and mounting was 550.

Your insurance doesn't matter at all. As long as you are legally able to drive on public roads, the state or county's insurance will cover your damage. Save the receipt(s) and call your county's number to find out how they plan on reimbursing you. It's always worth the effort to try. :) $550 is enough to buy something else cool for your Scoober!

Not sure about WV, but almost all states are allowed to have anything behind the driver and passenger seat completely blacked out. You can literally paint all the windows black behind the driver. How do you think limo's and window-less molester vans get away with it? :) Anyhow, 35% is standard for the front two windows and the rest can be whatever you want! Just an FYI... Looks great though! Any tint is better than none!

oddly enough all three items you listed are on my "to do" list
the rust is a seemingly losing battle I need some new metal in there to hold back the tide.

I've got everything I need to make my own large rally style flaps but haven't had to chance to finish making them.

I'd love to find a set of white mirrors to swap mine with or even paint mine, but I'm not sure how well painting would go on the plastic.

So yesterday my lady freaked out because her car wouldnt start for her when she stopped to drop off the redbox on her way to work.

I went to do the first oil change on the WRX the day before and noticed a small amount of oil dripping from the filter... and CAKED on oil all over the oil cooler... leading me to think there was a leak at the O ring in the oil cooler... So I wiped everything off and left it as is until I could get the O ring from the dealer... then swap that out along with the oil and filter.

She was freaking out when the car wouldnt start that I did something to make the leak worse (like wiping off the caked on oil) and that her engine was toast. I get there and it is a dead battery... we jump it and I put the scangauge on it and see that with everything on... it is only charging at 10 volts!

SO. we get a used 07 forester alt (90 amp vs 75 amp) and I throw that on in about 20 minutes...

Then I get started on the oil and o ring change.

Dropped oil, dropped filter, go to Harbor tool twice trying to find the correct size deep well socket (24 mm) for the treaded pipe that the filter screws on too... then remove that pipe.

I was thinking I would just be able to pop the old o ring off and put the new one on... NOT THE CASE!!!

I actually had to disconnect both coolant lines and drain the entire coolant system to get the oil cooler off... which wasnt easy considering the pinch claps were all facing upwards towards the block... here is a picture of the oil cooler for reference.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/06/Oilcooler-1.jpg

Lets just say it was a battle... that lasted about 4 hours. A good portion of that was spent trying to remove the pinch clamps from the coolant lines (facing the wrong way) and then trying to put them back on once the seal was replaced... I ended up scrapping them for some screw clamps and all was good.

Now there are no oil leaks and I can feel good about filling it up with Amsoil 5w-30 super synthetic... at $7 a quart.

First tranny dump will be tonight (1st out of 3 or 4) and maybe the front and rear diffs... all getting amsoil.

Oh yea, and I also cleaned off the MAF with MAF cleaner.

Edit **this morning my GF took the BD to work because of the alt swap and o ring swap... she wanted to make sure all was good and not leaking so I took the wrx wagon to work.

She calls me at 8:30 this morning to tell me she rear ended someone!!!!

It wasnt bad... just punched a hole in my bumper. Almost certainly because I have the JDM bumper beam on under my USDM bumper... so no absorber.

Luckily I have the JDM bumper in my garage just waiting to be painted and put on... so not too big of a deal.

I've been happier with mine off. I might find another snorkus to cut up to make a better inlet for air into the airbox.

My initial impressions of my setup compared to my factory setup with snorkus delete:
A little power gain but nothing crazy. More so in the low end so torque.
Response feels a little improved.
More low end exhaust sound.

I removed the fog lamps & went over the engine to see if anything was tampered with or replaced.
The passenger side fog light was filled with this nasty orange fluid & I ended up tossing it away because the housing & lens were cracked.
I have the driver side fog & it seems to be in decent shape but I'm definitely not putting that back on either. Most likely I'll get rid of that one too. I tried to open it but to no avail since the adhesive was tougher than I gave it credit for.
Also, I didn't know my hood could open like that...

I removed the fog lamps & went over the engine to see if anything was tampered with or replaced.
The passenger side fog light was filled with this nasty orange fluid & I ended up tossing it away because the housing & lens were cracked.

Sounds like water got into the light and began to rust. Same thing happened to me a while back. I just junked both fog lights and got some JDM projector fogs. Might be something to look into. :)

My initial impressions of my setup compared to my factory setup with snorkus delete:
A little power gain but nothing crazy. More so in the low end so torque.
Response feels a little improved.
More low end exhaust sound.

And also violent bogging near to the point of stalling at high throttle angles around 1500 RPM. Doesn't happen often but it's pain when it does, I'm going to be putting mine back in because of it. Link to more info (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1471819).

I've been happier with mine off. I might find another snorkus to cut up to make a better inlet for air into the airbox.

With mine out for something like 8 months I've had it happen a few times to a minor degree, and twice BAD. It's not a common place to be, 1500 RPM and WOT, but when you want it is usually pulling away from a stop sign into traffic (which could be WAY bad) or an autocross event where you can't afford the time taken to downshift into 1st from 2nd for 50 ft. Those were my two real situations I found myself in.

The cause is the MAF thinking a ton of air went in so it throws a ton of fuel in causing the bog, which can damage the cat (see link from before).

I came to the sudden and depressing realization that I may never compete my Subaru in a SCCA AutoX or RallyX in Houston. For starters this is my primary mode of transportation. Some freak track accident or abuse breakage will screw me. I was told once that if you plan to race and you're serious, be serious enough that you can walk away from that car as if it's destroyed and be ok with it.

I also realized there isn't a classification for "some parts are held on with bailing wire and some JB weld."

I did a lot of contemplating today.

Don't worry about being competitive at autocross, have fun and learn. Autocross has dumb rules and classes that make modifying for it very impractical. Stock class can use a $1,000+ set of racing slicks? WTF?

Rallycross on the other hand is easier to be competitive in with a stock car, soft suspension helps, and the driver is even more important on loose terrain than the car's specs. WRXs can get trashed by stock Justys. The chances to damage the car are higher however.

As some of you know I got some sti springs on my car last weekend, and now the other day I had my new all seasons tires installed. They're a little bit stiffer than normal tires. I've never had this stiff of a suspension before, and it can get kinda harsh on some of the crappy roads around central IA. The combo of stiffer springs, struts and tires can make a world of a difference for handling over stock. It's kinda losing it's DD capabilities tho... It still puts a smile on my face whenever I drive it, and that's what really counts!

Speaking of autocross, I wanna get my car in on that again, possibly. Again it's a DD so if anything happens to it I'm screwed.

Teehee, nice catch..
I edited the original post..

It should've read HWY, i.e. HighWaY

Anyhoo,
What I found without a snorkus in city driving,. is it sounded better (with my 2.25" and magnaflow with a cherry bomb as a resonator). And since it sounds better I put my foot dsown just a little bit more, using more gas and dropping my MPG a touch... It allows more and faster air in, then the computer reads that and adjusts fuel consumption to match.. I REALLY noticed it when I had the snorkus off then pulled the airbox out and replaced it with a cone.

My mileage REALLY dropped as did ALL my low end torque...

I'm ditching the K&N now too since I have a bunch of grim caked up in the 90 degree bend AT the throttle body. (read: K&N oil catching dirt which is passing through the filter).
I replaced the box with a K&N box filter and got the low end back, but I still wonder about any more low end and possible fuel efficiency savings.
These Subaru intakes are WELL engineered and with NA motors, it's practically not worth fiddling with it...

unless maybe it's the plumbing clean-up b/t MAF and throttle body...

My jury's still out on this one b/c I don't have the personal experience with it...
But it's good to pick brains of folks who can do the before and after comparisons with all the variations, ya know?

Smoothing out between the throttle body and MAF is the big deal (known as a hybrid intake), other than that all I'd do is feed the pickup with cold high pressure air.

Don't let any of that stop you!!

I rally my daily driver, and I run it HARD!!

It's an EJ22 and bomb-proof!!

I run prepared AWD, witht he WRXs turning rally tires and about 40% more HP and 200-300 pounds lighter cars, BUT it's fun as hell!!

I may not post times too close to the really good drivers, but I usually don't end up last.. At the last event I stayed just ahead of a driver rolling near 500 HP in a twin-turboed RS (read: anti-lag, spooled at 1500 RPM).

It's a blast and driver-skill is the ticket!

Get out there and try it out, but of course, be reasonable with your experience and learn learn learn!!

It's one thing to dedicate your life and have a dedicated car for stage rally, but getting out in a few rally or auto crosses a year is cheap, FUN and open to you, or anyone with a street-legal automobile!

Rallycross is where its at. I have never done it but racing on just road seems kinda lame...Skill is needed but when it comes to offroad racing, more factors come into play. It lets you really learn your vehicle and know how to make it do exactly what you want.
I love dirtyimpreza.coms one sticker "Dirt is for Racing, Tarmac is for getting there"

Back to the intake setup. My brain wasnt working earlier. I do remember my Legacy bogging down right around 1.5k. It was present whenever I had a cone filter only. That lasted less then a month before I undid it. My current set up is all gains so far. MPG will probably be down as I am having fun with a louder car. Gas tanks 2 and 3 since the mod will be better indicators of my MPG change.

Now back to the point of this thread...
Dropped my car off at the local subaru expert garage.

Certainly can make a difference. On my old '92 Legacy I'd crank it up to 38 psi, car handled much sharper at the expense of a harsh ride. Every tire is different, do some trial and error, see how it feels and how they grip. I wouldn't go below 28 psi, but yours might be higher than 30 right now. If not, then they might just be stiff tires and there may not be much you can do. At autocross events people will often crank it up over 40, but mind the max pressures on the sidewall.

While what you are told is completely true, you can always part your "wrecked" rally car to your newly acquired rally car. If you plan on sticking with the same make/model, you'd be surprised how much of it you can actually save. Granted, it will cost money. That's to be expected when driving your car to the fullest though! My recommendation? Go for it! Have fun! And always be true to the Scoober! :)

Any tint is better than none!

wv is weird about tint laws the OBS can squeak though as an "suv" and get darker tint on the back windows but for regular passenger cars it's 35% all the way around...
Ridiculous... *shakes head* What about vans with only drivers and passenger-side windows? Are those legal there? If so, are the considered SUV's? Also, why would an SUV be able to be tinted any darker than any other car? What gives?

From what ive been told from my tint shop in Portland, passanger vehicles must be 35% all around per Oregon law. SUV's must have 35% front, whatever % for the rest due to the fact they allow more light to enter into the vehicle. Stupid law but they have actually been cracking down on it lately ever since they passed the no talking/texting law

Any time I've ever bought a badge from a dealership it always came with the adhesive. Today I got surprise butt sex from a tow truck... 99% sure it's totaled. Time to go with something a little different for my daily driver/work vehicle and focus on building up the SVX into a beast I think. If the LGT doesn't get stripped and caged and turned into a rally car, then it will get parted out.

The tow truck missed the bumper support completely and pushed the trunk in about a foot. Crumpled up the sides and pushed things in all over the place. Mechanically nothing is damaged and it runs and drives great, I still have brake lights too, but no directionals heh. I'm perfectly fine, but I'll probably be a little sore in the morning.

while delivering parts to a shop today I saw they had a 96 LGT sedan that they were parting out. After inquireing about rust I asked for the price of just the trunk lid. $225 is what they wanted. I asked if that was for the whole car or just the trunk lid. Nope just the trunk lid.

Am i wrong in thinking I could get a new one for that cost?

Yea, I about cried when I accepted that it may be totaled and I will have to get into something else. I get too attached to my vehicles. And nope, LGT motor and swapped from auto to manual. Although the engine only has 30K on a good (properly done) headgasket job and full reseal. So if this gets parted out, look for at least a few good things to come out of it. The only thing from it I can use on the SVX are the rear lateral links, and possibly the swaybar endlinks, but i have to check on those.

Axis Ultimate pads (~$100 full set) at http://www.r1concepts.com and cheap disks (~$100 full set). Very aggressive pads. I'd also suggest Goodridge stainless steel brake lines (~$100), the part number for first gen Imprezas works for second gen Legacys. A master cylinder brace (~$100) works well too, and ones that fit first gen Imprezas again fit second gen Legacies. Look, if you want something for your braking system, every damn thing is just about $100 even.

Remanufactured from a local autoparts store, Pepboys isn't bad for prices around here. Just do the fronts, then decide if you want to replace the rears. I made the mistake of ordering remanufactured calipers online, don't do that. Get them from a store so you can throw them at the sales clerk when something goes wrong.

Enjoying my lightweight underdrive pulley, though I'd prefer a stock sized one so idle isn't a low voltage, not-so-cold-AC affair (hey I scored it for $20, though I did have to get $30 in new belts). Fantasizing about a lightweight flywheel. Might actually get an MSD coil pack and Magnecor plug wires. Response is pleasure. Realistically, I need to do braked first! You know, rotors that aren't missing large chunks (no exageration) causing massive shudder, and pads that aren't made of cardboard.

They're for those who might want to replace an entirely worn suspension with something new, and not parts here and there, every now and then.

Bottom line: They're great for the budget builder and those who want to drop there car, and not there bank balance all while achieving lowness :smt023 Not everyone tracks there car, and the valving on them are ok for my use.

I haven't had not 1 problem with them in over 3500 miles. Alot of the people who crap on them, are doing so because (IMO) they're not really a track set up. They're for those who might want to replace an entirely worn suspension with something new, and not parts here and there, every now and then.

Bottom line: They're great for the budget builder and those who want to drop there car, and not there bank balance all while achieving lowness :smt023 Not everyone tracks there car, and the valving on them are ok for my use.[/quote:25j5bnco]

Alot of people around here use them and i havent heard of one problem

All the OEM badges, yes. People design L7 overlays though. They're pretty sweet.

I actually Googled them again to find the thread I was thinking of when I said that (I remembered seeing a coilover body cracked in half). Turns out I didn't read it closely the first time I saw it and the pic wasn't of a Raceland unit (it was a more expensive brand). They were discussing how cost doesn't always equal performance, etc. I stand corrected.

A friend of mine with a '02 Impreza wagon has BCs, they're a bit hard but work well. I also know a guy with a second gen Legacy with Racelands, he just leaves them slammed for the look and can't comment on handling.

I havent opted to hit the track yet, but im really impressed about the ride comfort ive gotten with them so far. Dont get me wrong... They're stiff as most coilovers are, but not too stiff.

going by what i found out before I installed them, people give em a bad rep as they were priced so low for a complete set up that it was almost to good to be true. That and internet bad mouth rumors and the fact of where theyre manufactured (China)was all I could find for the negatives.

while delivering parts to a shop today I saw they had a 96 LGT sedan that they were parting out. After inquireing about rust I asked for the price of just the trunk lid. $225 is what they wanted. I asked if that was for the whole car or just the trunk lid. Nope just the trunk lid.

Am i wrong in thinking I could get a new one for that cost?

So over the weekend I did a few things to the GF's WRX.

- Tranny drain and refill with Amsoil ATF
- Rear diff drain and refill with Amsoil Severe Gear 75-90
- Installed Rallitek 4EAT mount insert (soft)
- Was also going to install whiteline gearbox positive shift kit until I realized that it MUST be only for a MT even though NOTHING that I read when researching the mod mentioned that it was only for a MT. The AT doesnt have that three piece crossmember under the tranny, just a single piece of metal that goes under the tranny mount.
- Installed Goodrich Stainless Steal lines (Blue) and flushed with Prestone Dot 4. (Waiting for speedbleeders before putting in ATE superblue or Amsoil Dot 4)

- Durring brake line install, discovered that her drivers side front caliper was without a lower bolt!!!! Upon further investigation, it appears that someone twisted the bolt head off and just decided to leave the pin with the other half of the bolt in the caliper. A quick trip to Autozone (only place in town that had a caliper pin for me) and I got the old pin out, greased the new one and installed. Really scary to think that not only did we drive the wagon back from So-Cal like this, but we also did a trip to Portland and back (1300 miles)!!!!
