i cut mine and bent the metal back into place afterwards. not worth having to bleed the brakes over.
Same here... do not recommend if your hands are not steady though

with a grinder for sure.... that could be tragic. a hacksaw blade does the trick and goes slow. plus the cut is almost unnoticeable

Ever since I bought my car it has had an issue with too much powertrain noise and vibration into the cab. Not a ton but more than I felt a stock car should. I checked the mounts when the engine was out of the car, they weren't bottomed out and looked like stock mounts (still said Subaru on the rubber). At first I thought it was just the nature of the car but after driving many other subarus, including a 98 rs 5mt (basically the exact same drivetrain as my car) I was convinced it wasn't normal. After swapping to a 5mt it seemed worse, to the point that at 3000 rpm or so it would create a harmonic vibration that rattled parts in the dash. Really annoying. So, I found a good deal on some used wrx mounts and an sti pitch stop that had been swapped out for group n mounts. Installed those last night. Wow, what a difference. I compared the hardness of the rubber between the stock mounts and the wrx parts and the stock legacy mounts were very, very hard. I put as much weight as I could on my thumb and on the mount and got maybe .5mm of deflection on the rubber. Wrx mount was still hard but not nearly as hard. Maybe 1mm of deflection. I'm not sure if the wrx mounts are supposed to be softer or not but they feel much, much better. Conversely, the sti pitch stopper was considerablymore stiff. The big end of the stock legacy mount had gaps in the rubber bushing to allow for some movement and the end was overall larger diameter. The sti one had a smaller diameter end and basically no gaps in the rubber. The stock mount could easily be flexed by hand, sti one could not. As weird as it may sound, next to the 5mt swap and suspension, this is the best thing I've done to my car.

Wonder if the stock ones were dry rotting? Any small cracks in the rubber? I hear upgrading engine and transmission mounts feels great.

Got my AC belt with tension bracket and new pulley guide installed today. Put the alternator / power steering belt on. Started car, everything beyond what I already am aware seems legit. Nothing flew off and the Kartboy lightweight drive pulley appears installed correctly.

So that project is wrapped up. Still battling seized up tie rod end despite 4 days of dumping liquid wrench on it. Looks like I'm taking a blow torch to it tomorrow to heat it up and expand it enough to get it off.

So one of my fog lights is cracked, and the other is missing pieces yet it still works. I wanted to get some laminate for car lights to see how long these cheap fogs would hold up. When I called VIP they said they didn't have them, and when I called Pepboys the lady says "No, BUT my friend wanted to do the same thing and wound up buying some laminate for paper at Staples, and that worked." "It actually stood up to the heat?" I asked. "Yeah, and the weather. It's been on his car for a year and a half now."

Fantastic, just got a 5 pack of 6.22" x 4.33" laminating pouches by Fellowes, which will fit my rectangular 5.5" x 3" fog lights. They were $8, which is a bit much considering these lights were $16 from Harbor Freight, but it's worth it for the sake of experiment (and I can do two sets of lights). Despite having adhesive on one side, these say they can be used with a laminator also (not to be confused with the type that require a laminator), which may be why they can stand the heat. I'll keep you posted.

Group N motor mounts and pitch stop installed. Wasn't too bad with the motor jacked up by the oil pan about 5 inches.
KYB GR2 stuts installed.
Installed salvaged power mirror and hung driver interior panel with new / salvaged window control box. All works.
Heli-coiled stripped exhaust stud.. drilling into the head.. not for the faint of heart.
Used blow torch to heat up seized tie rod end, unscrewed right off.

New tie rod ends and new ball joints.

Had the day off, spent about 8 hours working on the car today.

Ah, then it's shared with the back up light switch actually. Check to make sure those are working, then check the switch. I had to replace mine, which was covered in grease, which may cause a short. It's on the left side of the transmission and can be accessed without too much trouble from below. Its wires run up to the center of the firewall and plug in next to the O2 sensor plugs.

I will be getting a call from my local stealership's parts dept tomorrow for the new OEM wires, and I will be picking up some nice NGK plugs to go with it, since I am pretty sure the previous owner went teh cheap route and got $.99 plugs from autobarn.

Yes, and that would be why I would be sending my harness and the STi harness to ECS to get "sorted". My buddy and I could do it, but would rather have as little downtime as possible. He and i could have the motor and whatnot in the car in a day or two. The wiring would be another 2 or 3 days. I would rather pay the money to have a pro do it.

:smt005 hahahaha. Yesterday at work I had a lady ask me, "why is there water in the faucets? Is that normal?"
:smt017
Turns out she was talking about the drain under the sink. uhh, yup, normal

On my car- removed a couple uber rattley heat shields from the exhaust.
Also found out why my back up lights stopped working. Fuses were fine, reverse switch was working (tested with ohm-meter) bulbs were good. Turns out the plug connector where the wiring goes from the trunk to the trunk lid had somehow got caught in the hinge and cut the wire. A little solder and shrink tube later, working lights.

The Midas pads that were put on the L wagon by the previous owner were brand new, but glazed as hell and the rotors were starting to warp.

Put outback sway bars on my L (upgrading to 19/18mm from 16/14mm bars). Holy cow what a difference! I drove with the "L" front and outback rear for about an hour, but wasn't happy with how the steering felt. Off throttle the car didn't really feel balanced, until I put the 19mm front on. I might go with a bigger rear bar in the future, since in the dirt just having the upgraded rear was entertaining.

I didn't really think of it because I didn't want to put too much into this rusty car, but if it can be done for a good price maybe that's the way to go. Can I just get the calipers and keep my brackets, and if so will I still be able to keep my 14" wheels? Probably not. :-(

^ dont worry about too much oil you wont pop seals because the extra oil is just going to sit in the oil pan, the only time you need to worry is when there is enough oil to get really sloshed around by the crank...

My friend bought this type that goes inside the spring that had two hooks on top and a Y-shaped plate on the bottom, which worked for the rear after he took a hacksaw to the tool's excess length. Then he had to buy a two-piece external type that couldn't compress the front spring enough without the top grip being up on top of the upper spring seat, which was kind of iffy in terms of it holding there.

Those spring compressors can be a pain in the ass. It took me several attempts to line up the compressor arms correctly so I could get it down and have clearance to get the springs to seat right. In all actuality it was a matter of finding which coils to clamp on to. Turns out you really can't do it straight across from each other. I had to get them on practically at 9 o"clock and 1 o'clock on different coils so I could clear the seat of the KYB GR2 and the top plate.

I'll be honest.. it took hours for the first strut because I couldn't find that magic alignment. The second strut took about 30 minutes.
Oh yeah, I busted that first spring compressor from Harbor Freight.. found out the hard way and later on that they aren't impact tool rated. The second set after I returned the first one and blamed poor quality on it stripping out actually had a warning tag to not use impact wrenches.. a warning that the first set did not have despite being the same model on the same shelf.

ANYHOO..

Today was the day. The big day.

I fought the crap out of that stripped exhaust header stud. I mean it was an epic battle of wills. Two different sets of destructive stud removers and days of saturating in liquid wrench just deformed it more and more. A long time ago.. hit a cinder block chunk.. ripped open my OEM header, bent some studs, ripped rad hose and cracked a rad tank, warped a tie rod and ball joint..

Anyway.. vice grips for the win. Got the stud out. Replaced all the studs, put my SpeedyRacer UEL headers back on with new gaskets.
Finally bled the front brakes after the strut install job today.
Flushed and refilled coolant.

The car hasn't moved in forever so I let it idle for a long time as I did other things, let the new belts, the new AC tension pulley and the Kartboy Lightweight drive pulley settle in.

Drove the car for the first time since all the work I did. No CEL's, alignment is out but that was expected from the new steering and suspension stuff. Car runs great.

The engine smokes a bit right now but that's all the liquid wrench cooking off from the various places I had to use it.

Working under the front of my car a bit today to straighten the bumper so I can install a sweet front lip I found and cut up to fit my car. I noticed that the top half coil on the front left spring is missing (at inspection I was told it's just missing an inch; more like 5). Also, I'm pretty sure that the front left strut is the one made for the front right because the label's on the back side of it and the lower perch faces differently, but the brake line bracket is on the correct side.

UPDATE on this. The laminate holds up fantastic, it's been through heat and rain. Here's a pic of it over my fog light that's missing part of the glass. You can see a couple drops of water on the laminate where the glass is gone.

Two days ago.. sanded and painted my roof rack flat black. It looked like crap because it was peeling and showed signs of age and weather damage. The roof rack back on. I like the way the car looks with it on. I had it off for nearly a year.. got tired of the Frankenstein looking bolts on the roof just sitting there exposed.

Took the shifter boot off from the center bezel. I never really ride with passengers except maybe my son and he sits in the back seat. During all this work on my car I noticed for the first time that the boot is torn on the passenger side. I took it off. I don't care for the giant gap in the center console bezel.. but I love the look of that polished Kartboy shifter sitting there exposed. But I need to clean that gap out because theres bits of rubber from the old OEM bushing still laying around in there.

Been driving my car around for the first time in weeks since all the work I've been doing. The Kartboy lightweight drive pulley is working well and all around my car is running very well. It needs to be aligned still, ran into an interesting situation that I'll explain in a different thread about that.

Washed the car for the first time in ages since it was just sitting there gathering dust.
My car is running so well and I trust all the work and parts I put in recently that I started driving with the radio on for the first time this week.
Yeah, sounds weird to say that but I've been driving in silence for a few days because I was in paranoid mode listening to the engine for any signs of malfunction. That and I love the sound of my car with the UEL headers and the big ass muffler.

Off of CL here on Long Island. It could be a flood car, as I see some of the ground wires are oxidised. The car was always pretty close to the beach. It would be nice if I could just purchase that portion of the harness from Subaru because it is shielded, but they don't have a listing for it, just a complete harness.

I just want the car running right for now. In the long run it will end up with a turbo swap of some sort, but not for at least another year or so.

One, I've noticed it NEVER works
Two, it screws up thermostats and I know Subarus are very finicky!
Three, It clogs cooling systems.

green97gt
04-29-2010, 05:01 PM
now now now.....ive used stop leak(the brown kind with the pellets) many many times and not had it once, ever mess up a cooling system....but its important to say these were all on old farm/beater trucks

as for WORKING, well, that depends on how you define "work"

does it slow your loss of coolant? yes(assuming its not a gaping maw of a hole) ive even parked a truck and watch it leak, stop leaking, leak stop leaking, leak, stop leaking for several minutes.
does it completely stop the leak? no way in hell. ever. the end. period. no backsies.
does it mess with heat transfer? yes. thats why it can ruin thermostats/etc.
does it clog coolant lines? i dont know, but i really doubt it, i would imagine heat and pressure would dislodge any clog. this stuff
does crumble in your fingertips after being heated.

does it seal head gasket leaks/block leaks/etc? nope

is it a good idea? im a jam or to get home, or to cobble back together a beater, sure. but to fix an issue with a daily driver, not really.

and he ^ is right, subarus are finicky about cooling/thermostats. i wouldnt put anything other than coolant in mine, you can look at a subaru thermostat and screw it up.

Everything was fine and dandy until I flipped the rim over and noticed this. And yes I know that aftermarket wheel manufactures make OE rims for OEM.

DarkPhoenix, you can clean oxidation of circuit boards with white vinegar, then rinse with high purity isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. You can get 91% in drug stores which is okay, but electronics grade 99.98% isopropyl is best. I only have 91% myself, seems to work okay. I've 'fixed' a few circuit boards with this method in the past. Use a toothbrush to scrub, and blow dry with compressed air that's been through a line drier, ideally.

EDIT: Painted my whole grill (except the emblem of course) flat black. Car looks more menacing. Still need to take a pic. Not sure what the chip is for, but my cousin is in electrical engineering and he ran continuity tests on it. He said that when he goes from the "ground" to another pin on the chip, it should close and open the circuit immediately. He tested all of them and the last pin was staying closed all the time.

Got a line of an 04 STi suspension with Pink springs.
Started looking for WRX wagon rear seats to match the fronts.

I got some new goodies in. installed the new sway bar bushings and spacers for kartboy end-links to whiteline swaybar.
everything feels good up front now.

The x-member bolts were a pain to put in, and didnt go in all the way. I even chased and lubed the threads prior to install.
they eliminate a noticable amount of body roll. (i also have k-boy differental outrigger bushing already installed).
the legacy is feeling more and more the way I want it to. : )

i got a call from my father, he was saying that his 06 outback was making ungodly wheel/brake related noise...he didnt want to drive it until i could look at it, i do mobile mechanics, so have all tools needed with me.

so he walked to work, i picked him up and drove to the car.

he fired it up and drove it down the block and back, and OMG the noise this car was making, it really did sound like the drivers side wheel was eating itself...

in my 5+ years doing mechanics i have never heard such a gut wrenching noise coming from a perfectly healthy, not old and busted car.

so i removed the wheel, and started giggleing....

turns out there was a palm nut(like an acorn, only rock hard) stuck in between the rotor and the shield and making a terrible noise.

his car really did sound like it was dying, and apparently he put quite a few miles on it, just rattling/screeching away to get home before he parked it...if my car was making that noise, i wouldnt have driven it either.

Might be kicking myself in a little bit. I dropped the car off to my friends shop. It looks like the new ECU cleared up the Codes and missing issue. The code in particular that was giving me heartburn was the cam sensor circuit code and after soldering it together and putting on the new ECU it went away. The only code that keeps coming up now is a fuel temp sensor code. Don't know what that means, but here is the part where I kick myself.

One, I left the MAF hose loose when I put it back together the other day, two I never actually checked the plugs to see that they weren't broken or what have you. He is going to pull one to check because everything else checks out nicely.

Let the asskicking commence!!!

I removed my instrument cluster with much help thanks to wisconsin marks DIY. I replaced all the gauge faces with new ones that I ordered from 02legacygt. Looks amazing in the day time. Came across a small problem. Apparently because there was no tach on the brighton there was no need to have functioning lights behind the dead panel. There are bulbs there that do not light up so i'm hoping I just need new bulbs. BUT I need some advice, I bought the white instrument faces that light up blue, but the problem is they look splotchy because of the way the bulbs are placed. Brighter lights would illuminate more but has anyone dealt with this before? Or does anyone have any tips? thank ya!

Soul Shinobi
05-08-2010, 12:07 PM
The large 2" rubber hose that goes from the intake to the throttle body area is going to the idle air control motor that lets in air when the throttle is closed. Pouring a little seafoam or carb cleaner in that tube can help free a sticking one. Also, your issue may be the MAF, make sure it's plugged in well and clean, and that the air filter isn't wet or have a nest under it.

Still troubleshooting the issue that I am having.

Turns out that the previous owner only replaced 3 plugs, and that was with Bosch Platinum +2s, and left the drivers rear plug in, and loose. I changed the plugs to NGK Coppers gapped at .040 and it seems a little bit better.

Anybody ever gotten a 0181-3 code? It's a fuel temp sensor code. I can't seem to find any info on it. The car is running really rich after it warms up. The ECT and O2 sensors are checking out fine.

It was the right rear quater panel. a lady backed into it with her SUV put a dent in it. apparently it would cost 2,500 to fix. So they said it was totalled.

Changed my inner tie rods out. The ball end of the driver side where it tapers in and meets the shaft was warped. The passenger side socket was worn and the ball end just sort of shimmied in the socket causing the wheel the shake.

Adjusted the camber on my front struts. Gave myself a little negative camber. Just a hair. Thanks to this forum I now know what the hell those tick marks are on the struts and why that top bolt was all goofy looking.

Still needs to get aligned. I eyeballed the toe angle but it's not good enough. Needs a machine to be precisely on.

realized my ej25 didn't come with electrode-less spark plugs and replaced them.. fixed the hesitation right after idle and a lack of wanting to start within the first 10 cranks... oh and clouds of unspent gasoline dumping out the exhaust at high rpm's.. should notice some better mpgs now as well
