Finally put my R1 concepts pads and slotted/drilled rotors on today. its nice stopping without the steering wheel shaking my fillings out lol

I still need to put my fender on!

Nice same here when I did my fronts.. however I need to do my rears because it seems like I can feel it a tad in the brake petal.

I also need to bleed the brakes like really soon they feel so spongy I was going to buy a pressure bleeder because the last one I had (one man brake bleeder) from advance or auto zone was a piece of crappy shit

Those are real nice. Similar style of whatever they are called on some subaru legacy gt, or legacy bbs style, I think that style looks so good on legacys. What size tires you gonna run? Hey, fellow washingtonian, wasssup.

Ya i think they will look real good. I love the bbs style. Not really sure wat size tire yet. I prolly wont put em on for a while, gonna wait for my tires on the stockers to wear out haha. And WOOP WOOP for fellow Washingtonians!!

I bought the subaru wheels you see in my pic from a guy who's 2003 legacy was totalled.
My car did have 185/70/14 tires. The 16 inch rims call for 205/55/16, was what subaru factory put on them. funny thing is that my speedo was slightly off with old stock tires, and now it is right on, I would check it driving past those radar speed signs they have around here. the actual height difference is about a half inch from axel to ground, or one inch total diameter. les swabb guys says it wasnt enough diff. to effect gearing or alignment or speedo, well, at 35 mph it made about a 1 or 1 1/2 mph difference on speedo, maybe a slight less acceleration in low rpms, seems decent from 3K rpm up, cruises freeway speeds a little better. don't know weight difference of 14" hubcap rims and 16" alloys

Yeah the Legacy GT runs 205/55/16 and I'm not convinced they recalibrated the speedometer between the L model and the GT. They just let the L model's speedometer read a little high - it's still within tolerance and the soccer moms and drive the L Legacies don't ever speed anyway

16" alloys are way lighter, I know because I have both and move them around my basement all the time.

(Happened a few days ago). Got a text from my friend with a stock 2.5rs "I want to go offroading!!!". So I took him to a old spot that I use to patrol in my XJ. It had just rained that day, so it was extra muddy. We had a blast and his 2.5rs did surprisingly well. The Outback kicked butt right up to the point where I became more of an idiot than I already am. I was trying to straddle a rut, slipped into it, and then tried to power out of it. The BG was quiet, quiet, quiet.... LOUD! Tore a hole in the exhaust right before the muffler. With the UEL headers, it sounds like a demon from the deepest depths of hell.

Now I need to go get that patched up. Or have the exhaust shop make me a custom axle back...

anywho, panted the trim around the windows to cover up the mess we made with the primer. I peeled away the painters tape and 2 things happened........1st, the painters taped pulled up some of the blue paint that was on the passenger side, and 2nd, now half the ass end of my roof and quarters are covered in black overspray dust.......ugh.....time to dump more $$ and time into painting......... on the bright side i opted to paint the side mirrors black and looks nice on the blue

I never had the pleasure of seeing my "L"'s speedo anywhere where I could judge it's accuracy. In My GT though the speedo was always off my 3-4MPH according to my GPS, now the "L" with the GT wheels on it is spot on.

Oh, and you want light? The 14" alloys I took off the "L" (and which are going back on for winter) are LIGHT.

Since today was such a gorgeous day, and seeing that I had off of school for Labor Day, I decided to do some touch ups on my car's bodywork.

I taped off my lights and windshield to touch up some paint on my front bumper. I only put one coat of paint on for today, since I didn't have enough time to put more that on since I have to go to work in a couple hours. Here is a pic of what it looks like now:

Now, I'm sure you're wondering where my grille is at, well, it's been pulled off, sanded down, and pained, and I'm going to work on a mesh insert to put in. Here are two pics of it all painted, a pic of the mesh insert that I'm going to use, and a pic of what I plan for the finished product to look like (minus the STI badge).

pulled the front of the engine apart and replaced the cam and crank seals, got the new waterpump in and realized subaru sold me the wrong tensioner assembly and they were all closed when this was noticed, so I had to order a pulley kit to get the tensioner pulley that was bad. Will have all the new pulleys and the new timing belt in tomorrow with the new radiator and hoses. Hopefully there won't be an oil leak after this, the smell from it burning off the exhaust gets annoying.

idle went down a couple hundred, but the occasional cutting out deal is almost gone, (does this very rarely anyways, but is way less bad when it does happen), idle is more steady, can't really tell if there's any diff. in power or anything. the plug change seemed to go way faster the second time, guess its practice :smt002

I know this body shop owner guy who swears by using jb weld as a gasket sealer on header/exhaust manifolds. headers are notorious for leaking. he says the header can still be removed if need be, maybe needs some prying, and you can resurface it if you have too.
I have used jb 4minute dry weld a few times, worked in situations where strong epoxy stuff failed over and over, (I know this is different than exhaust gasket application, but it is strong stuff, and you would probably Never have a leak, for as long as you had them on there).
just an idea to consider, I haven't tried it myself, but the body shop guy has taught me a couple good tricks that have worked great about other things,

I have JB wield and it's in the glove box in the car.. I was going to mix some up yesterday and today but I forgot all about it.. I know where the two leaks are on the cat but I'm not putting JB wield on the axle back I mean that's the gasket's job to seal that up..

but JB wield is good stuff.. it was the only stuff that could hold the cut off shields I made for my JDM headlights only inches away from a bulb..

Call around to a couple local junkyards and see if they have any reasonable front ends for the same generation Leggy. If they do, they won't charge much for a hood, bumper and headlight. If the insurance is going to go up (And I assure you, it will) you're much better off spending $500 on the parts, $50 on the paint and clear coat, and just sanding and painting the parts yourself. Disassembly and installation of those parts is a no-brainer (I'm sure you already know that though.) So, I can honestly say it's either years of higher insurance or a one time payment of $550 (for parts. I have no idea if the accident was reported by other drivers, by-standers, etc...)

Regardless, I'm sorry to hear about the misfortune and I'm glad no one was injured. Good luck!

Started it up on a base tune right around midnight and the evil sound of metal smacking metal reared it's ugly head. After doing some checking today while I was at work and he had the day off, he's thinking the shop that did the boring/honing of the block also decked it, and took off too much metal. Now pistons are going nom nom nom on his expensive ass heads. Errr, head. Just the right side bank is noisey.

water logged the block during the meet today, boiled down the problem of it not being able to hold idle or drive to either it being a blown MAF from the water hitting it of water still in the block that needs to dry out. either way i wont know til 2morrow, too tired to do work on it at 11pm :smt015 :smt015 :smt015 :smt015 :smt015

Car is working fine now, but the AT oil temp light keeps barking at me for a few seconds when i turn the car on. I'm guessin its cuz i have low fluid. Still have Air bubbles in the coolant tank but no evidence saying its the head gaskets (no white smoke, no white residue in the oil, etc.) So sometime this week im going to have to find out if maybe the thermostat is acting up or there's a pinhole in one of the lines, idk.

on a better note switched to royal purple 10w40 and a royal purple filter, block runs much smoother so i plan to use royal purple on my other fluids as well ^_^

it does this weird cutting out thing sometimes while driving mellow on flat ground at lower speeds, I did plugs, air filter, fuel filter, oil change, no warning lights on. car has 135K miles, timing belt done at 78K, could it be the plug wires? the ends look ok, ????? :?: :smt017

It would be best to create a new thread. That will certainly capture the interest of many others that might be able to help. However, step 1 would be to get your OBD code. Places like O'Reilly's/Checker, Autozone, etc... do the OBD diagnostic for free.

Found out that the lifted Subie owner isn't interested in trading. Ironically, it belongs to scott from SJRLift. I did finalize a deal on a 1988 GL-10 wagon. It's not stick like I wanted, but it's still pretty nice. Relatively low miles, well taken care of, maroon with gold-ish 13" rims, aftermarket speakers. I'll get my bmw's title on Sunday so I'll get pics of it up then.

So... even though it's not a Legacy, think I can ask questions about it on here? Afterall, it got redesigned and called the "Legacy", so I think it counts.

thats the AVCS (automatic valve control system) I just did the timing belt on one of those motors saturday before it gets dropped into my cousins 02 wrx. The valve springs are quite a bit stiffer than the phase 1 2.5 or the 2.0 turbo, the cams are MUCH harder to turn in it.

IF its an automatic, there is a fuse on the passenger side strut tower that will put the car into FWD by activating Duty Solenoid C. This is for emergencies only so you shouldn't be driving on it all the time.

Why is it that it's bad for the car? My GL-10 has it installed and I personally like the added fuel economy from running FWD only.

^^ Eventually the solenoid is going to burn out because it wasn't designed to be activated over long periods of time. It basically has to always be holding back the pressure that would normally have to take the torque of the engine. It should also say in the FSM something about how it shouldn't be used a long time.

Yeah that would work. My suggestion would be to use the FWD mode around town since that's when the AWD affects MPG the most, and put it in AWD for highway. Either way don't expect to go another 10K with it on. But I'm sure your car ADHD will kick in at some time and it won't matter

Not even. You'll be "saving" at most 1-2MPG. Why? Because you still have the weight of the driveshaft, axles and rear diff sitting on the car. You're still asking the little motor to pull the same weight, just not turning as many "accessories".

Your added fuel economy is the same as if you drove sedately around town.

jg09
09-22-2009, 01:00 PM
So what does the Duty C solenoid control? Just the AWD/FWD function or is it more? And where is it located in case I need to replace it?

I have a smaller tire on the back passenger side with a stock 13" subie wheel on it, so I really do not want to run the AWD. I know it's damaging the car as we speak, but I'm going to get it replaced in the next day or two, then I'll be able to keep it in AWD more often.

Correct. If you put a fuse in there, it will put the car in FWD mode. Which should only be used for towing with the front wheels off the ground or temporarily limping home to fix the tranny.

dodik
09-22-2009, 04:38 PM
yes its in AWD^^

jg09 why do you always want to destroy something with pretty much any car you have? im not trying to put you down or anything i just think its pretty stupid to do most of the things you are trying to do especially with a small budget? i'd understand if you had a dedicated DD and other car would be just to f*** with it? runnign all wheel drive car in fwd mode will not increase your mpg much if at all becasue simply even if your engine is not turning all the mechanical components they ARE still turning becasue they are connected to your wheels and are dragging, it would also unevenly wear your tires which will result in damaging your awd system in the end anyway. so if you want to have fwd/rwd car why dont you just get 4x4 tranny where you can disconnect one axle normally from inside the cabin. if you want to make your car fuel efficient invest in maintaining it properly that WILL yeild the most improvement. get good air filter system, put low rolling resistance tires on it, get rif off all unnessesary for you things like sound deadening (if it exists in gl), fix all rust and other mechanical issues tune your carb to run lean if possible (be careful w/ this one dont kill it). that car is light and has pretty small motor that can make decent mpg just stock. sorry for a long post but i truthfully feel bad because most likely you will break it if you keep same attitude as in the past (ohh i wonder what does that do, oops ......anyone needs f******* up car). seriously i understand you want to mod but you should read on how to do things properly and finish what you start even if you f*** up in the process everything could be fixed you just need to commit to it and finish it. lol damn im bored at work. lol.

Well, today my new exhaust that I ordered arrived. All I ordered was the intermediate pipe and the muffler because the cat converter looked in good shape. Well, I removed the old muffler, and the intermediate pipe, and while pulling off the intermediate pipe the cat converter fell apart in my hands... I was heart broken. So I packed up the new exhaust, put in the back of my car, and parked the car over in the side of my yard, and there it will sit until I can scrape up some money for a new cat.

After that I got bored, so my dad and I went and seafoamed my parents Ford Explorer. Man, what a difference that stuff makes. If you've never seafoamed your car I really recommend it. So yeah, that what I did today.

Any chance anyone has an extra cat converter sitting around that would fit a 1995 Legacy L wagon? If so, I'm interested if it's under $150.

You can probably find a high-flow cat online for under and $100, then have an exhaust shop weld it in. Or, you could save up a bit more and get an entire custom exhaust made from the headers back, including new cats. This might run in the $300-$400 range, but would be well worth it.

yes its in AWD^^

jg09 why do you always want to destroy something with pretty much any car you have? im not trying to put you down or anything i just think its pretty stupid to do most of the things you are trying to do especially with a small budget? i'd understand if you had a dedicated DD and other car would be just to f*** with it? runnign all wheel drive car in fwd mode will not increase your mpg much if at all becasue simply even if your engine is not turning all the mechanical components they ARE still turning becasue they are connected to your wheels and are dragging, it would also unevenly wear your tires which will result in damaging your awd system in the end anyway. so if you want to have fwd/rwd car why dont you just get 4x4 tranny where you can disconnect one axle normally from inside the cabin. if you want to make your car fuel efficient invest in maintaining it properly that WILL yeild the most improvement. get good air filter system, put low rolling resistance tires on it, get rif off all unnessesary for you things like sound deadening (if it exists in gl), fix all rust and other mechanical issues tune your carb to run lean if possible (be careful w/ this one dont kill it). that car is light and has pretty small motor that can make decent mpg just stock. sorry for a long post but i truthfully feel bad because most likely you will break it if you keep same attitude as in the past (ohh i wonder what does that do, oops ......anyone needs f******* up car). seriously i understand you want to mod but you should read on how to do things properly and finish what you start even if you f*** up in the process everything could be fixed you just need to commit to it and finish it. lol damn im bored at work. lol.

I'm realizing that keeping it in FWD really has no advantages, but I still am going to make a FWD/AWD toggle switch just for the hell of it. Could be useful sometime. But I am going to go easy on this car. It will be rally STYLED, but that's about it. I'm saving my money for an STi, then I'm going to rally the GL-10.

and now the check engine light IS on, any ideas? (don't know if I should make a new thread with this question instead of hijacking this one, :smt018 )
thanks, Nate
It would be best to create a new thread. That will certainly capture the interest of many others that might be able to help. However, step 1 would be to get your OBD code. Places like O'Reilly's/Checker, Autozone, etc... do the OBD diagnostic for free.[/quote:18tw8sy7]

engine light went out on its own after a week, heh but the car is still cutting out a lot when it feels like it,
I went to auto zone, and schucks, and they only have an OBD2 tester, which only goes back to 1996 of course, since my legacy is a '95, grr.
The guy at autozone said to put a jump wire in the fuse box from between 1 and 14 or something, and turn key to ignition, and watch the blinking pattern of the check engine light, and this will be a code,
I have the chilton's manual, so I will check this out, even though my light went out, maybe a code will appear for what is making my car cut out, like the fuel is cut off temporarily,

Some 95's have OBD2. You have to check under the dash for the plug. It's by your left knee when you're sitting in the driver's seat.

Spent a grand total of 4.5hrs working in the dark on these horrid rotors last night. 01 Mitsi Galant, tried the whole "put two bolts in the small holes to push the rotor away from the hub face" and that just ended up cracking the top of the rotor hat off the rotor. So I had to soak the thing in PB blaster...and then smash it like a crazy man from the back, and chisel away the old rotor until it came loose.

Ridiculous:

Just stock type rotors and pads. Nothing major, but those rotors wore a groove 2mm deep into the pads.

changed the oil/filter today, valvoline 10/30, fram filter, was on sale, usually use castrol gtx and fram tough guard filter, only had 1500 miles on the oil, but was kinda dirty looking, think it was the cheap stp filter that I got on sale last time, autozone oil/filter sales are hard to resist, though I don't think I will skimp on the filter again

seattlelegacy2.2 you could have an issue with the duty C solenoid in the transmission. It is what controls the biasing of the AWD in the 4EAT. It's an electronic control in the rear housing of the tranny, it is possible to swap it out with the tranny still in the car from what i've seen if it is whats actually bad. Try checking the TCU trouble codes and see if there's anything it thinks is wrong with it. I had the same issue with the 92 legacy but I didn't really worry about fixing it because it was losing 3rd and 4th gear so it wasn't a priority to me.

found and fixed a couple gasket leaks within my exhaust system. Having a hard time figuring out where this rotational squeak is coming from on my driver side front wheel. Tested the wheel bearing and the brakes, they check out, i have a broken CV boot that i never fixed from 2 yrs ago, maybe it finally rusted inside?

is it just a squeak or is there any popping? Can you hear and feel it or just hear it?

i have heard popping sounds for a while ever since a mechanic did my wheel bearing for me, but i couldn't pinpoint where in the front end it came from, this squeak is definately coming from a different location than the popping sound. as for hear/feel, when it squeaks, its only able to be heard between 0-25mph, the sound actually stops after 25mph, its not that its rotating too fast, you can actually here it stop squeaking and then start back up abruptly as you slow down. The popping is only heard when im turning, usually when i hit a bump or im coming off a hill and onto flat ground, so my guess is a bad ball joint on that one.

the squeaking at low speed is probably your brake pad warning sound when the pads get really thin, mine did that. put on new pads and it was gone. saw later in the manual that it was designed to make that sound as a warning.
the popping in turns is most likely your cv joint, and you already said the rubber boot is torn, water in and it has rusted, etc. does it most when turning, had the same thing. I just did the one side where my boot was torn and it popped in turns, and probem was fixed.

The popping sound can also be the bearings in your tophats binding up. Turn the wheel with the hood open and see if the rubber deforms like water draining in sink...if it does then your tophats need regreasing or replacing entirely.

I'll take a look at that sometime later today, ty 4 info.

as for the sqeak, it does stop from time to time but thats the rarity, most of the time its constant. Brakes are fine, and the tabs from the shims arent rubbing on it, so its not those. Had a buddy of mine listen to it bout an hour ago, says that it sounds like something is rubbing or pulling, something like that. My guess is the dust shield behind the rotor, havent looked yet, not in the mood to end up finding something broken when i have no income to pay for it at the moment :smt012

Thankfully my friend has an unmolested '03 that we can compare to when we have questions where things fit.

I stripped down both engines tonight, got the intake manifolds off and I'm ready to do a TGV delete before swapping things onto the 257. Got the vf39 with shaft play off the 257, need to pull the vf34 off the 205 tomorrow and get that swapped on with new gaskets.

It sucks but I think I'm gonna have to pull the timing belt off again (already did it once) to get the driverside sprockets and rear timing cover off to drill and tap a bolt hole for the cam sensor. I'm gonna try from the back side but there really isn't any room to get a drill in there because of the AVCS controllers sticking up out of the valve cover.

Will keep updating the pictures here for those interested. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v685/TireIronDTD/02%20WRX/ej257%20swap/

lets see where to start....

1. driver side wheel well, rotational squeak, possible dry wheel bearing
2. Squeak/rubbin noise when turning wheels while parked, bad bushing in the steering rack perhaps.
3. torn inner CV boots on either side, passenger side occasionally knocks when hitting small bumps during a turn
4. Control Arm boot torn on driver side, no problems with it so far

ya.......i gots me some repairs to do and no money to do them >.<

Managed to get the hole drilled and tapped for the cam sensor on the EJ257 without pulling the timing belt and cover :smt023 I got a 12" long drill bit and could just slip it past everything and press on it so it was curved a little while drilling and got a nice straight hole from the back. The TGVs are pulled apart and home to be cut up and ported and plugged and then those and the intake can be painted.

Replaced the coolant hose that runs from the back of the coolant pipe to the hard line on the passenger side:

http://www.jeyping.com/hose.jpg

It was leaking about a gallon a week and when I tugged on hose to disconnect it it fell apart in 3 pieces in my hands.

What a bunch of work for one hose though. The intercooler was completely in the way and I tried to do it without removing it but I ended up having to take it out. And of course due to clearance issues for me that also means unbolting the entire intake manifold. Needless to say I had my entire induction system in many pieces today. But we're all good now, drove it out to dinner tonight and it's great to be driving it again.

Try to find a used MAF sensor or clean yours with MAF cleaner. That would be way cheaper and they very rarely go bad.

As for power and mileage, probably yes. Cel's usually indicate the computer is in kind of a "safe limp-home" mode, so the tune is no longer optimized.

Deployed the airbags this morning.

Guy pulled out of a street right in front of me and I hauled it down as much as I could but couldn't avoid slamming into his Odyssey. Airbags blew up in my face, passenger bag smashed the windshield and glass went flying everywhere, smoke everywhere, couldn't see or breathe, and I still managed to pull the car off the road.

Then the guy got out of his Odyssey and said, "I can't see any damage to your car". That might explain why he pulled out onto the road right in front me.

Needless to say I'm pissed. I spent all Saturday putting the car back together, drove it a little yesterday, and today I have no Subaru to drive again. And in typical St. Louis fashion he was unapologetic, didn't have his insurance card, and wondering why he should even look for other cars on the road since he should be the only one using it at any given time.

At least the Ladue PD let me drive the car back home instead of towing it. Subaru rally car FTW. I felt all hard core driving a car with a completely busted windshield and airbag in my lap. That said, at least this did happen in a part of town where people carry insurance - already got the claim process underway and an adjuster is coming out soon.
