I am pretty sure your oil pump is above the oil level line... When I did the Timing belt replacement, we did the oil pump too and it didnt drain hardly any oil out at all.

Get the ultra gray permatex for most subaru engine applications. It's the next best thing to fujibond and hondabond, both of which you won't want to pay for and will have trouble finding without going to a dealership.
Be sure and read the manual on the oil pump, and use the rtv sparingly, but make sure the surfaces are both very very clean and smooth. You don't need a thick bead of it, I normally run a small bead and then smooth it out with my finger. You don't want a lot of extra to spooge out of the joint.

Had the exhaust redone today...much to the pain of my wallet. The original shop did a poor job bending the pipe from the resonator to the muffler, exacerbated when I put a 2nd muffler in the system...it sagged on high speed bumps AND rubbed against the rear diff subframe before it was replaced today.

Today I cleaned all the oil off the bottom of my car, again, Simple Green sucks as a degreaser, my auto teacher hooked me up with some Engine Brite and that stuff works awesome. I coated the whole shop floor with oil that came off my engine :-? . But after cleaning I took it for a drive and when I came back there was a little trail coming from the head gaskets on both sides. I know that these engines have problems with head gaskets but do they often leak oil??
But I'm going to pull the engine after I get my project car working and put some cometics in it and if the finances are there maybe some delta cams

More likely it's your valve gaskets...

Valve gaskets?? Is that the same thing as the valve stem seals? How does that cause oil to leak out the headgaskets.

It's the rubber that goes around the whole valvecover, those are a common place for oil leaks on subaru's. Had it on my old engine, and had it on the wrx engine too.

Nope definatly not. I totally cleaned all the oil off everywhere and after the drive the only place there was oil was right along the headgaskets. And there never was oil around the valve cover gaskets. I figure even if it isn't the headgaskets I will put new seals everywhere and my headgaskets are going to go eventually anyways so its better to replace them before it causes my car to overheat and while I have another car to drive.

well to get to the valve stem seals, you'd need to take off the valvecover gaskets anyway so replace them as well. Along with the sparkplug gaskets and the 16 or so rubber grommets that fit over each bolt in the heads.

yep I was planning on it, but I'm not doing the valve stem seals, if thoes leaked I would be burning oil, i'm doing the headgaskets, I'm still confused as to why the headgaskets would cause external leaking of oil though?

Got pulled over too last night. Had a headlight bulb go out on the way to the movies, was working most of the way home, and winked out again just before I got to the spot the cop was sitting.
I didn't even get a warning, I told him I'd be replacing it today at work. Then the damn thing went BACK ON as I pulled away.

It could be the cam seals at the front of the engine, sometimes the oil takes weird paths down the motor when they leak.

oh ok, is that bilstein GT-B? or just GT suspension? I think sti suspension will give you about the same ride height, wrx usually raises our cars up. Coilovers are for if you wanna go lower! or handle better, whatever justification you need.

It's just a GT suspension. I was thinking of just getting lowering springs on wrx or sti shocks. I'd love to get coilovers but I've had bad experience with them.

Good news for the longevity and sexiness of the BK...Got it into the bodyshop yesterday. Some weekend warrior "dough-ing" of a slow speed collision gave up the fight over the winter, hence the small ellusive cracks that erupted over the passenger rear wheel well. The paint was great and I never saw it last October when I purchased it. Matt at Fantastic Finishes here in Canton is whipping the wagon into shape as I type. THeir work is quality. Going to be pulling the engine as soon as I get it back for timing belt water pump cam crank and oil pump seals. Probably seperator plate also... Tired of the "hot oil smell" at lights.

You can order those from the dealer too FYI...they include the cost of cutting the key in most of the time. At least that's how it was with mine. Just gave the guy my VIN and my fresh key was already to be picked up and used within 2 hours.
It ended up costing slightly less than buying it on ebay then taking it too them to be cut. ($26 with tax) and I didn't have to wait around/put up with any 'tude.
Bottomline is I'd call your local dealership and see if its worth the trouble.

Looks like I will be installing that this weekend! I am pretty sure there is only 1 left in the country and it is at Ogden Subaru if anyone else with a 99 with keyless entry wants to upgrade to an actual alarm.
It is all plug and play... even uses the same key fob. It came with a security blinking light for the dash, the main alarm ECU (which doubles as the shock sensor), a starter interrupt relay, and the OEM subaru alarm stickers to put in the rear windows.

Ah! I still have the BD. It's just garaged at the moment. That build ended up going to the bottom of my to-do list due to me having to move and all. I didn't have the garage space needed nor the time to begin. Everything mentioned is still planned though. Gonna go with the EJ257 longblock and the 6MT. let me know how it is... is that the torque grind?
I will certainly do so. And, yeah. Torque grind. I wanted more low-end to mid-range power while the turbo is spooling up. I'm thinking this should work out pretty well.
What have you been building lately?
Building onto an STi shortblock for my BG5. Replacing nearly everything except the pistons (I won't be going over 450HP in this car.) After everything is running nicely, I'll swap out my injectors and fuel pump to finalize it. I'll compile a short list of what's been done as soon as it's finished. :)
Oh please replace the pistons while you are in there, they are the 1 weak part in the Sti blocks. You can crack the ringlands with stock Sti power... The rods crank block and heads can stand up to over 400HP but the pistons are the weak part.

Discovered that my engine can get quite thirsty 11 MPG on this tank...
The hell were you doing? You usually get 26 on your hybrid build right?
normally get 21 in town and 29 highway, I was a little liberal with the loud pedal, really I made one hell of a fun beer run :D
the take away from all this: track style high rpm driving is not fuel efficient

Thanks for the info! I'll certainly look into it. I've heard a lot of people actually say the exact opposite so this certainly has me curious... I'll check and see if the pistons are still accessible and if so put a stop to the build and grab some pistons. What's another 600-700 bucks anyway, right?

Yea, if you're talking EJ257 Sti block, than the pistons are definitely the weak point. And before you buy pistons, crack the block in half and have the cylinder walls inspected. If they pass clean you may be able to get away with stock size forged pistons and a light hone. Otherwise a simple bore and a mild oversize piston will take care of you. But before you spend money on pistons (actually only like 300 or so for the pistons) be sure and have the block checked so you know which ones to get heh.
If you need advice on pistons I can ask my friend, he's currently building his 257, it's at the machine shop right now. He thought he could go the light hone and stock size pistons, but they found a tiny tiny little crack at the bottom of the cylinder wall (really odd place for it, normally in the middle to upper section). So thankfully the place he got his pistons is letting him exchange them for the .25 oversize and he's is having the machine shop do a bore on it. They said it was very small so .25 over would be plenty to clean it up.

That's awesome. I've had the block inspected (it's brand new but always worth a look) and everything was perfectly fine. We (the shop that is doing my work and I) went over possibility of new pistons and everyone there, including the Subaru techs, didn't find it necessary unless I was planning on 400+ HP at any point in the future. Being as this is my daily driver, I'm only going for a reliable build with a bit of "pep." I spoke to them today to find out if the block was still apart or where they were with the build and the valve springs, retainers and cams are already in... I'd have to have them pull everything apart all over again and I just can't justify that at the moment for two reasons. One, the money they would charge to do that would probably be slightly less than having them simply pull the engine to do it later (if anything happens.) And two, if the pistons do go bad, by then I'll have my own garage and plenty of time to just do all this stuff myself. I'll be ordering some oversized pistons here soon for my other car so at least the pistons will be on hand.
I do appreciate all the info and help though, for sure. Also, what kind of pistons are you finding for $300?! Are you able to get super good deals or just buying crappy pistons? Please don't say CP *cringe* ;)
Anyhow, thanks again! I'll certainly take all these things into consideration during future builds.

If I can use his hoist and other tools, I am just going to redo the head gaskets and clutch and call it a day. Took all of the stickers off of the GF's GG which the previous owner had put on the rear hatch.
I also bought OEM all weather mats (because it didnt have any floor mats in it) as well as a K and N, perrin LWCP and new cabin air filter and some used OEM crossbars from the dismantler for $50.
K and N and cabin air filter installed same day.
Perrin LWCP and crossbars to be installed today.
This weekend I will be restoring the headlights and baking/clearing the orange out of them.
Next up is a gutted Up-pipe, cobb access-port. Those should be done by the end of this month.
Then in the next 2 months or so I will be sourcing some Rota G-Force wheels and tires and piecing together an sti brembo swap.
Question: I might be able to get my hands on a full set of 2000 JDM STI brakes for a good price... How good are these brakes? Almost as good as the sti brembo's? or are the brembo's that came on the 2000 JDM sti?

Harry, don't bother with the Brembos. What's the GG putting out for HP, 260hp? Not worth it. Better spent getting a tune and better brake PADS.
For my car, I took one fender liner off, started wiring up my JDM sidemarkers. Also dropped the side skirt and watched all the dirt fall out of it. I had enough to pot a plant.
Hosed down the brake fittings with PB Blaster getting them ready to be removed and replaced with the Techna fit lines. So the car is on 4 jackstands.
Also removed insurance from the vehicle, was able to backdate the policy a month and got $200 back from the insurance company. Nice!

My knock sensor showed up. It tool so long I could have walked to Florida to get it and walk back to Texas with it. Changed out the old failed knock sensor. I'll tell you this.. never again with the engine in the car. If I have to do that again, engine out. I found it relatively quickly. But it was buried under some wire harness and throttlebody bypass line. Zero room for my big meathook paws. Had to cut the factory wire ties and thread the sensor out to the passenger side. (had to use two 6 inch extensions on a ratchet to get to it from next to the TB. There was no other way.
Used a combination of jedi force and a long screwdriver and to thread the sensor back across and lined up. More jedi force for the lining up part.
Took about an hour of cursing and jedi force conjuring. Cleared the codes, checked for codes, took car for a drive. All good.

To those who have done swaps on these cars, how long does it take you to do a straight R&R of an engine? I was looking at the FSM for it, and it looks like it would be crazy easy, as in my friend and I could probably have the engine out in about an hour.

You can actually relocate it back a bit from under the TB - makes it easier and doesn't affect performance. There's a few pre-drilled bolt holes for this. To take the engine out is a bit extreme - the route you went is perfectly normal.

If you are just doing a direct swap one engine out, same type in, it should be like 6-8 hours if you have never done it. It takes me and my friend about 2 hours now in my driveway. Also, my engine hoist doesn't like to roll on the crappy pavement I have, so a lot of the time, I lift the engine up then roll the car backwards.
It's like 4 electrical connectors, the 3 fuel lines at the rail, 4 bellhousing bolts, 2 motor mount bolts (undo the pitchstopper so you can lift tne engine tranny assembly up high enough to split them), 4 coolant lines, unbolt a/c compressor (5 bolts) and move it to battery location, either disconnect p/s or unbolt pump (4 bolts) and move it over abs, 6 exhaust nuts.
The only thing you have to do under the car, which you can put the car back down after, is the motor mounts, bellhousing, exhaust and 1 radiator hose.
It's a little different with a turbo motor due to the exhaust, but not by much.

I think it looks nice, but not executed properly. I'd take it off, and have it stitched so you can avoid the wrinkles, then spray adhesive it on to the plastic.

I did it my self. I can't do much of that. It currently has Adhesive on it. I will mess with it some other time. I just decided to do it. Stitching is not something I could do as I don't have much of a "creative" mind when it comes to stuff like that.

Well today after being to "sick" to work i decided to be productive... So i replaced my front brakes first, Being able to stop without Pushing all the way down sure is nice, ive found myself stopping really early for things all day since. Then i jack my car up and found out what that crazy rattling noise was when i put any torque on the engine... apparently one of my gravel guards (factory ones) got bent and was only centimeters from the driveline. so i fixed that. after fixing that i looked at my bumper and decided to do alittle stitch work with some zip ties to fix my bumper that i busted a few months back, also bent back the bumper bracket and connected it to the car so my bumper wasnt loose like it was. after all that i decided i was tired of the aftermarket fog lights that i put in (because they looked like crap) so i put the stock ones back in and it looks 100% better. and because the fogs looked so nice i couldnt have my jmd headlights looking as oxidized as they were so i pulled them off wet sanded them and polished them. my car looks like a new car now. Oh i should say it was raining all day. i dont have a garage to work in so it was all under an easy up. Only problem i had for the day was i accidentally broke one of the filiments in my headlights so i have to replace those. to bad the replacements were at my house an hour away from my parents house. but oh well it all worked out anyways. Very well needed wrench sesh. with the ol subaru.
now its time to figure out why my cruise control doesnt work (probably the switch tho) ,why my spedo randomly stops working then works again, fix my exhaust leak (new header  ) then its time to make her stand out... new rims seats and im thinking a sticker bomb inside it... my only question is ... where do you get that kinda bomb... cant even buy bottle rockets in california yet alone a bomb. haha

HG Leak is getting pretty bad. It's not over heating, but I am losing about a quart of coolant for every 100 miles I drive. Crazy thing that I am seeing, or feeling, is that the thermostat side of the radiator is cold after driving for 35 miles. It is an OEM t-stat, so i am thinking it is part of my HG leak issue.

Could be your radiator has a very tiny leak. Or a pinhole leak in one of the coolant hoses that only expels coolant when you're above a certain rpm/pressure. Both happened to me, thought it was the HG's too.

Go my new power today:
Motomaster Eliminator Spiral Grid Battery
•Provides up to 770 CCA
•10-year total warranty, 3-year free replacement, and 3-year power assist period
•Offers 17 times the vibration-resistance of conventional batteries (vibration is a major contributor to battery failure)
•Tightly wound cylindrical cells give added performance and durability. Delivers up to 30% more cold cranking amps during the first five critical seconds
•Maintenance-free - completely sealed configuration recycles hydrogen and oxygen - no spills, no gas, no need to ever add water
•Uses AGM technology - battery acid is completely absorbed into cell material
•Ideal for regular vehicles, but can also be used for the most demanding vehicles
Cleaning the battery pan, wiring and clips, repaiting, regreasing, installing the new power and new tie down tomorrow. Slowly uprading, more functional stuff than performance and esthetics, but at least I'm starting on it ;)

Hmm, and apparently some internals changes to the transmission, but those details I haven't got a clue what from what..

In 1999 all Subarus got Phase II transmissions both automatic and manual. The automatics changed how they work a lot, not sure what was improved with the manuals (bearings? I think syncros got an upgrade in 1997). An easy way to tell Phase II hardware is the engine block and transmissions now have 6 connecting bolts instead of 4.

Turbo that bish!!
To hasten the demise of your current engine, may I suggest a 200 shot of nitrous and a day at the track smoking cars? You may get a good run or two into the low 13s/high 12s, and you can brag about that all day long!

LOL! Not sure what turbos you have driven, but every turbo 4G63 I have ever owned made more torque than it did horsepower. And that was out of two tiny litres. And if I did want to build a fast turbo car, it would be a Mitsubishi. Subarus cant even begin to make the turbo power that 4G63 can, without lots of money.
That being said, i love my Subaru. It hasn't eaten a transmission on me yet. If this was my Talon, I would be on tranny number 3. :-)

I broke 2 tranys with no mods both on non turbo outbacks, (suby transmissions suck) but even stock turbos have lag, and its just different indescribably not N/A, N/A engines just go... I mean every tiny movement does something no waiting for boost no mater how fast it spools their is ALWAYS lag. even the Germans who do the BEST job on turbo cars still dont have the razor edge response. I will quote my absolute favorite driver of all time Tiff Needell, "turbos are a rather crude way of creating brute hp" and he is a definite authority on cars and how they drive.

Installed the factory alarm upgrade for the BD yesterday. The sensitivity had to be adjusted because I could damn near put my fist through the drivers door before the warning alarm sounded...
Everything works great but my lights dont flash with the horn honks... I have a feeling it is because I have my turn signals wired to alternate blinks with my JDM side indicators.
Anybody think this would cause the parking lights to not flash?

It is about to start raining parts in the next few days I should be receiveing these as well:
Perrin Afta-MAF intake tube (black)
Perrin Stiffi master brake cylinder brace
Perrin Radiator shroud (black)
Whiteline positive shift kit
Mishimoto ancillary hose kit (black)
STI front splitters in WRB

Grimmspeed Turbo/uppipe, turbo/downpipe, manifold/uppipe gaskets (for uppipe install)
Friday me and Elislider (hopefully) will be tackling the STI up-pipe install ($60 on ebay), LWCP install ($50 at Specialized parts planet used), master cylinder brace and positive shift kit.
While I am up there, I am going to be picking up an order of Amsoil consisting of 6 qts High performance synthetic 5w-30, 12 quarts of ATF, an EAO oil filter, and some gear oil to do a complete fuilds swap on her wrx too...

Yes, the one I bought [from what I remember] was described as "legacy 98-00, all non STI".
and now I know it won't fit :smt013 (lol)
My bad for not researching it more thoroughly and hastily throwing money at a sweet steering wheel upgrade.
I did not get it at your kind of steal.. I paid $$, here, for a JDM one shipped,
I'll either sell it on for a little less than I paid or hope it'll fit my wife's 03 OBS.
I looked, but not hard enough, for info on swapping a MOMO into a BD (95 leggo).
This is the thread I found but they're pretty much all talking about WRX MOMOs, not the Legacy one I got...

Gotta remember that JDM gets cars (and parts) one year before us. So, our '96-'99 models are their '95-'98 models. :) A lot of people make this mistake but luckily there are a lot of Gen3's out there to pick up the parts without losing monies!

Got great news from the machine shop. The heads are in great shape. No cracks or warpage. So the car is being put back together once they get the parts from Subaru, and I should be able to get another 100k out of this engine. That will be awesome once I start getting stuff together for my turbo engine build up. Once that is done, this 2.5 will go into my girlfriend's GF Wagon. Woot for more scoot!
