I don't understand why dealerships won't do warranty work like that. They get reimbursed for it. If they really weren't sure that they would, they should have looked into it rather than telling you flat out no.

Well, some lose money with doing it and they can also get backlash from the parent company for doing it too much... I heard a few stories....

That is something I need to work on.
Planning on putting the yellow tint on my fog lights after work today. not sure how well that is going to go, but I got a big roll so I have some room to make mistakes.

Today I pondered about redoing my ground wires under the hood. Can I do them in any order and from time to time, or do they all need to be done at the same time for it to be effective? I'm thinking maybe blue shielding to match (what's left of) my paint job.

I just start pulling things out 1 at a time and painting them. The PS reservoir and lines are new though. Next I want to pull the intake and clean it and paint it a color that looks original.

I'm a bit weird, but my favorite part of pulling an engine is drowning everything in Meguiar's All Purpose Cleaner, sandblasting and powder coating brackets and the intake manifold, dressing plastic and rubber components, and replacing rusty bolts with shiny new ones. :smt007 Unfortunately my car still has an engine in it, so I had to stick to cleaning whatever I could reach today.
I could do a legit build, and the thread would say "Meh, did a STi swap with a giant turbo, got new wheels, painted the car, put on coilovers and OH MY GOD, LOOK AT THIS BRACKET I PAINTED! IT'S BEAUTIFUL!" :smt016

the drivers side rear quarter is 99% fixed up from where I cut the metal cancer out. The rear suspension is 100% off the car now that I pulled the trailing arms off the car, the forward bushings were unbelievably shot, the center crush washer fell out of the rubber on both sides. Also I finally finished the major sandblasting on the rear sub frames and got everything painted with a coat of rust reformer and pulled the fuel neck and de-surface-rusted and painted it

Decided to start installing the parts and fix the car up a bit, going to push to work from home which will save on gas money and we can trade the wifey's Accord for a bigger vehicle for family hauling.

I wanna go to IKEA!! We got a new house, for which I will sign for tomorrow. 3 bedroom, 2 bath, and most importantly...A 2 CAR GARAGE!! I'm so excited. Now I gotta get the motor swapped in the subie so I can at least get the car to the house (It's an hour outside of Charleston :-? ) I need it for a daily driver, as I now have a 1:15 commute to work and the truck isn't gonna cut it. I would really like to trade the truck for an outback or forester for a DD.
Anyways, I can't get hold of my friend who said I could use his engine hoist...we are considering 4 of us just lifting the motor out of the engine bay once the fluids are drained...My girlfriend and I picked the new motor up by ourselves to load it into and unload it from the truck, so it might be manageable. Once I can get it to the new garage, I will work on installing the new exhaust, headers, a new front axle, and so on. I can't wait to drive my car again!

Got my free driver's seatbelt, FINALLY. It's SO NICE. Comes with a buckle, too. NICE. Tech who put it in rounded off the bolt head. NOT NICE.
Also, finally got the dealership to own up that they "bench bled" the master, and never bled the brakes from the calipers, as is supposed to be done per the Subaru recall for the master cylinder. I work at a dealership. I have access to such things.
Brake pedal is still soft-ish, I guess that's just how it is.
Also picked up two cargo cover clips, and the clips I was looking for for the rear floor behind the rear seats. $9 for all of it. I work at a dealership. I get discounts on such things.
OH! Still looking for a window switch, that and my tranny are my next projects, plus probably getting the A/C working.... it was hot outside today.

I have the pieces that go there but before I glue them in i'm going to go to the post office and see how much money i will get if I file a claim, I doubt the post office is going to pay $250 for me to get a new one and it may just be too much of a hassle overall for me to really pursue it. I'm not too worried, I just set the pieces in the tail light to see how well it would look and you would never notice unless you were looking for it.

Umm, they're unlikely to honor any claim now that you've installed the parts. In their eyes, you could easily have damaged the parts when you installed them.

Ya never thought of that, I could take it off before I bring it in. I was supposed to open the package infront of the person who delivered it and I had all intentions to. But the delivery person brought it to my dads work instead of our house because he knew my dad would be there to sign for it. Like I said though, its not the biggest deal in the world either way. I have the pieces that fit there and if I glue them in it will hardly be noticeable.

Just clue the pieces in. It's an amazing amount of hassle and work to get USPS to cover ANYTHING. Plus, you'll have to pay for return shipping, and the sender will need to file the claim with their postal service. If they aren't in the US, it could be months before they ship you another one. I've been in this situation before. It sucks.

I've rescued some seriously nasty interiors. It's awesome showing the owner their new interior after I'm done, but some of the pet/baby/girlfriend/wife/mistress induced filth I've had to clean up... some of that stuff will make you gag. Pull the front seats to get started on the interior, and there's a used condom, crusty underwear, and a tube of KY. Or a prehistoric half eaten sandwich. Or a dirty. fuckin'. diaper. :smt104

I knew a girl in high school who never cleaned her Tempo. I understand that it was a Tempo and doesn't have a lot of love for it, but the back seat floor was packed to the back seat with garbage - mostly fast food bags and leftovers. A different time I left for a month long underway only to come home to my wife leaving one of my daughter's sippy cups of milk in the car for about three weeks. On top of that we were living in Hawaii at the time so the temp was a solid 78 degrees year round with a humidity to match. The wife isn't much for cars so I have to take care of both of our. I love what you can do with cleaning cars, Thomistopheles, and wish I could be your apprentice.
Nothing speccial with my car today, just drove it to work.

Drove the car today! I missed it so much, and this new motor is horribly stronger. Had a hiccup...was driving to get codes read and it went into.limp mode and wouldn't idle. Got the normal speed sensor code, but also got a code for the front oxygen sensor and idle air fail safe. Started the car to drive away and it has run fine since. Plan to clean the oxygen sensor ans iacv this weekend if I get time between moving and all. I'm so happy to be back in my car...eff that stupid dodge.

Cameron needs to sell those things! Hell, I'm sure it would be well worth your time. Charge like $20 for a pair shipped. $5 shipping and $2 in parts along with perhaps the few minutes it takes to make. :)
Thanks for the encouragement, I will be putting each of these two pairs of harnesses up for sale shortly. Unfortunately, materials alone (plus the shipping to get them) works out to over US$25.00 per pair :/
I had taken my time building these, but with practice maybe I can assemble new ones in "minutes" (<1 hour, lol) The labels are very nice but are particularly fussy to apply.

Went to the junkyard and picked up a Neon coil plug and a Legacy coil plug for the MSD coil swap. 2 bucks. Kind of funny that in the entire junk yard there was one Subaru and about 500 Neons! Yep. Wide body. The welded metal on the fender are the new inner-fender liner holders. When you cut the fender up, the liner inside hangs WAY down. So, I snipped it up and welded new holders. Once I fiberglass everything, they'll be hidden from the elements. Below is a before:

detailed the wife's outback: wash, clay bar, cleaner wax, gloss wax. detailed engine bay, waxed the door jams, changed the oil and rotated the tires. while the tires were off washed them and waxed them. ~11 hours
Tomorrow it's the interior and then off to the import car show nationals in Carlisle Friday.
Pics, man! Pics! WTF is wrong with you?!
Lot's of things :D
here's what the outback looked like parked at the show, after a ~250 mile drive:

Traded my STi seats for some 03 WRX ones + cash. The WRX seats are heavier, but are super comfy. The STi ones by comparison were comfy, but nowhere near as plush. I could sleep in these WRX ones.
Also went to IKEA, and bought half of aisle 13. LOL.

Swapped intake manifolds - from a JDM ej25D Forester (no egr!) with a ghetto rigged setup, to a mostly complete early legacy ej20g manifold! Much cleaner setup, only issue is I need longer spark plug wires, since the manifold has no provisions for a coil pack. I plan to make a bracket off the A/C bracket and hang it where the AC comp once lived.
Got rid of some stumbling issues and idle uncertainty, now she runs about perfect!

Looks like I'll be shopping for a 3" stainless resonator, detinting my car, and remounting my front plate instead of cutting my 06' Sti scoop into the spare hood this weekend.

Ok, then why are you removing it if your within the parameters? Or do I have that backwards...? Ether way you should just need to do the front door windows.
Mainly cops want to see the driver, so as long as they can see the outline of you, you should be fine. I was told his be a State Trooper friend of mine. I dont even know what mine is. Just think of work vans, only front windows, maybe a rear. So if needed just re-do the fronts and your set!
grayguy
05-23-2012, 01:12 PM
Your thinking is backwards. I'm 10% over the legal limit. Basically legal 50% means half the light transmits through from inside to out. Limo style Tint is usually 0%. This is the most legal tint ive ever had, everything else ive had is 20%.
The way the law is written in Minnesota, technically cars can't have anything besides the rear window tinted, but if your legal all around they let it fly. Also, last year they passed a law making the installation of illegal tint a criminal misdemeanor, so if they know which shop installed the illegal tint they will mail then a hefty fine.
So basically, Mn has really been cracking down on tint. I had already planned to detint my car because it is the old style that was starting to look purple...but now I probably won't put any new tint back onto it.

Ridiculous! I have 5% all around and I would absolutely hate to get rid of it. :( I feel so exposed driving around in cars with no tint... MN has some craziness going on when it comes to tint, I guess. That sucks.
grayguy
05-23-2012, 03:34 PM
It's mostly profiling around here that is the issue. There are a lot of tinted out, straight piped trucks and muscle cars around here, and upper end lux cars that are blacked out that never get harassed, but if your in an import worth less than $20k and you have any violations you are going to get harassed.
I understand there are illegal things about my car, but ive always felt it was pretty ridiculous what non import vehicles can get away with that we can't.

I was wondering if I had it backwards... I think I would be in trouble over there... I think my car is like 20%... I think Brad has 15 or 20 on his cars. They used to be picky about it over here, but not as much as they used to. 20% here I think is legal.

I love those wheels dead, I was SO happy when i found a set for my car.
I just bit the bullet and bought another muffler for my car. I LOVE how it sounds now, but it's not worth the continued harassment I've been getting. So I bought a 14'' Stainless Magnaflow 3"in/out resonator. Hopefully it just quiets it down and doesn't ruin the sound
On a more positive side I got my new scoop in the mail this week! I'm excited. I also picked up another pretty good black trunk and rust free door to replace one of mine. I think I'm gonna pull the wing off one of my trunk lids and see if i like it, I've always liked the Wingless+big scoop look.

Installed 4EAT Power Mode switch. Looks and works good, but I doubt I can make the little LED light on the rocker switch come on. Because the switch is used to short the #4 pin of the Traction Control Unit to ground when "on" and the circuit is open when "off", I doubt we'd want the positive voltage that powers the LED to go to that pin on the TCU.

That doesn't sound good at all. Are these hubcentric spacers or "universal" style? I've heard the universal style are very dangerous. I've had some H&R hubcentric spacers on my Scirocco for years and have never had a problem, though I did have to get longer lug bolts at first.

I love it when it's an easy fix! Speaking of...
I got my foglights working again, loose connection. The fogs are now yellow! Saw that one of my side markers weren't working. It seems it's just a bad connection right where the bulb makes contact. I might actually end up buying new ones. These ones, I bought years ago, came with mud and dirt all inside and out, pretty weird. I have new license plates (not personalized because I didn't know I was getting new ones...) and also bought a nice frame for the rear and a mounting plate for the front. I've always wanted to try stickerbombing so I tried that on a couple interior pieces, and I think I'll keep it! I kinda personalized the interior a little more. I'll put up pics someday, but it was a good saturday.

i have had 4 or 5 wagons now (subaru) and they all had bad rear wiper motors, instead of replacing the last 2 i took them apart to see/fix. on had a bad motor, which is 2 skrews and it pops rite off, junkyard subarus are full of new motors as its suck a common prob so i just pocket them :smt018 . the other more common issue is this big plastic wheel in the mechanism, it has a spiral skrew thing on top of it that wears a groove in the plastic wheel so no more wheel turny, the wheel is also easy to get off and on too so easy fix, give it a go, fix your own parts :smt023

that sounds like a "destination" salvage yard:) where is it? i will drive the 6-hours to madison area :smt023
A friend of a friend works at Don Miller Subaru in madison, he gave me the info for the place...then followed up with "Watch out, he'll try to screw you over" about prices. The guy who runs the place seemed nice enough on the phone, but I've heard reports of him being a total jackass to other people.
I'll post up the info if everything goes smoothly...or if he's a total dick. Either way, keep an eye on my members rides thread for an update about it.
:( dont want to drive 6-8 hours just to get into a fight with some hillbilly:( keep us posted on this if you would :smt023

Big difference with Hillbilly's and Rednecks... I think Hillbilly's are more south... :smt031
Anyway, I got my SUS bumper today! Gonna see if it looks like something I want to add to the BD... Now to find a rear lip to cut up to make my mud guards fit...

Installed a boost gauge that works finally (had some old 80's VDO that didn't measure negative manifold pressure). Bpv was leaking like a mug: -10inHg at idle when it should have been -20. Swapped it out for a spare bpv (primary of a TT, lol) and I'm idling much better, but still boosts as high as before. Spool up may be marginally faster, but I was expecting better lol. Maybe I need to reset the ecu.

Been working on trying to take care of 'little stuff' this past week.
1) Went to 10 different auto stores trying to find that little red 45A box fuse from in the main fuse box (96 Legacy Wagon). The number on the side of it is 5512, not sure where to get it from or how much it will be now?
2) I had to pour water between my seats on the way to work yesterday cuz my floor was getting really hot (right where the tailpipe section fell off). I need to figure out how to reinstall the piping.
3) I bought the oil pressure sensor piece, but didn't have the right socket size so still not done (got the piece a week or two ago now).

Pulled the timing covers and valve covers from the new engine. Everything's looking good so far, other than rusty brackets and bolts. I got one VC in primer tonight, the other side and the plug wire brackets will be done tomorrow.
I need a blasting cabinet...and a parts washer. Life would be much easier.

Ran into a guy with a red B4 in the parking lot. Its a 5MT with eyelids, front lip, and a painted grill. I also noticed that the bulb for the ignition was replaced with a red one. I told him about the site, maybe he will jump on. He was talking about wanting to change the headlights (he was kinda being vauge on what exactly he wanted to do) but said no one localy would touch it because of some sort of Subaru contract in the area. Anyone know what he is talking about?

^^ I want my eyeballs to not have read that.
My poor car is being driven 2hrs a day now... on a stupid commute. It needs a wash really bad, but the office driveway is asphalt till the house, then it's gravel. Stupid.
Working 14hr days too, same pay. What a joke!
