View Full Version : What have you done to your car today?

jey just had a good laugh about your Christmas song, one clarification what kind of 12V chargers were you talking about ie cell phone or battery charger?
I usually have all sorts of stuff plugged into my 4-way adapter, right now I have a cell phone and backup battery/inverter/air compressor/light plugged in but on trips I'll throw in the CB and I used to have a portable XM unit too.

Swapped out my flat winter tire for a temporary summer one just to hold the car level while it's getting repaired. I also moved the car so it's near impossible to get out of the driveway. Think Austin Powers:

put about 300 miles on, and rolled over the 194 thousand mile mark on the SVX. had an "interested buyer" on it as well, he drove it, liked it, and we took it to his "mechanic" who was some guy working out of a hole in the ground.
the "mechanic" looked at it and told me "this car only has 500-800 more miles on it" i asked why he said that and he told me "there is oil in the intake tubing" i noticed he removed a vacuum hose from the plastic tubing, and there was some oil in the tubing. he then went on to tell me that this was because the rings were "destroyed" and "i was lucky if this car made it home"
what a bunch of bullshit. clearly this man has never been around a subaru, every scooby i think ive ever seen with more then 12 miles on it has oil in the intake. thats why they build catch cans..
i think they were just trying to "tag team" and get the car for nothing.
what a waste of an afternoon.

Replaced the rusted out and leaking power steering cooler on the SVX with a universal tranny cooler. JUST fit inbetween the a/c condenser and the radiator. Also replaced the lower radiator hose while I had the coolant drained. Hopefully I managed to save the powersteering pump from death by the lack of ATF that was in the system. It was certainly loud as hell while it bled all the air out of the system. It's a lot more quiet now and steering works great. I still have to replace both front axles and do the front brakes, but I've needed to do that since the spring... They don't click too bad, although the brake vibration on the highway is pretty scary.

our SVX did that too, only when you romped it, i contributed it to blowby
i tried replacing the PVC and alot of other odds and ends, but if you kept the pedal off the carpet it wouldnt do it, but if you put it to the floor, the dipstick would be out maybe 3/4 an inch next time you opened the hood.
but not my problem now. its gone. :smt010
maybe try running it and putting your thumb over the dipstick hole and work the throttle and see if you get pressure?

I'm ready to cry, my car isn't fixable... After dumping all this money into the headgaskets and clutch and brakes the front end can't be pulled out. So now it's time to find another car and figure out what to do with this one. If I get another second gen maybe I'll strip it for all the parts I put on, if I get something else I guess I can part it out and try and get a little money back...
Huffer
12-31-2009, 05:08 PM
Why can't it be pulled out? It didn't look that bad. But yes, if you find a clean shell (maybe with a blown engine) you can swap in your engine etc.
These 2nd gen Legacies are going for dirt cheap these days. Yeah find another one with a blown motor or damage to the side/rear, I see them pop up all the time for around $1000. It can even be a L model, sedan or wagon.
Swapping over the hood, bumper beam/bumper cover, and headlights is only a few bolts! Or you can just piece it back together slowly and hit some salvage yards for the parts.
TireIron
12-31-2009, 06:08 PM
it got pushed in and down to the point where the fan is touching the crank pulley... And because of the 12 years of maine rot he can't even try to pull it, it would just rip it apart.
I may find a lower mileage one with the headgaskets taken care of, I've already seen one thats an auto. Get that if it doesn't have the rot under it and then once it warms up swap my 5MT into it to get it back the way I want it. Then I wouldn't have to try and sell the brand new OBX headers and Stromung axleback sitting in the basement or the $300 in driveline bushings that are still sitting in the box. I can also swap the new brakes (calipers, SS hoses, pads, and rotors) onto it. And then I have spare knuckles from the car to take my time and do wheelbearings and balljoints when it needs them.

Pulled the PS pump off to get a good look at the area where the sludge is building up on the block, I cleaned it off and drove around a bit, turns out its coming from the PS pump itself and not the headgaskets. Havent figured out why there's air in the Resvoir tank yet, opened it up and took a look inside, lots of sludge on the walls. Opened the radiator cap and could see a lot of junk on the cap itself and in the coolant. Not good

Just finished installing a white 99 Outback SUS hood, driver's side headlight assembly, and driver's side horn (it was missing when I acquired the car. Hmmm.)
Should have pulled the plate blocking the hood scoop BEFORE installing the hood, as I am now covered with insulation. The white L wagon definitely looks interesting with the hood scoop - we're back to the sleeper look!
Tried to push out the dent in the front bumper without removing it. Failed. Guess I will have to pull it if I want to fix it.

It was 44 degrees yesterday so I got a few things done. Got a car wash, polished my headlights, reinstalled and zip-tied the left fog light dead panel. Finished making a hybrid intake out of a 95-97 intake pipe, instead of cutting anything I made an insert to smooth out the corrugated section inside. Will install soon.
I took my brother's Aprilia SR 50 moped out for a spin so it could stretch its legs, then he went out for coffee on it and came back shivering. That little thing's a lot of fun, 50cc but it's supercharged and the top speed's been relimited to 54mph. Will have to tear it down in the spring, I think it's got a small leak somewhere, and a little rust because the previous owner kept it under an open car port.

swapped out my leaking powersteering pump. Hopefully none of the ATF that leaked into the timing cover got on the belt. Now I need to scrub down the engine once it warms up a hair.
Swapped out my front washer fluid pump. It just randomly died one day but it took only a few seconds to swap out. 2 bolts off the washer fluid tank, harness off the pump, hose off the pump, pump pulls right out of the tank. Now I don't have to have a keep a bottle of water in the car and squirt things onto my windshield to keep it clean when driving in this winter slush.

I found out why the door switch on my rear passengerside door doesn't work. It's not plugged into anything. Now I have to hunt down the wire for it and see if it will work when plugged in. I've also got to pull the lock cylinder from the passenger door and repin it to work with my key (apparently someone replaced the door and left the old cylinder in there). And I have to hunt down why the auto driverside window doesn't work and why once the car is warmed up the cooling fan stays on all the time.

I get my alignments at NTB. They have a 1 year, 3 year or 5 year plan. I go with the 3 year for 150 bucks. I change things enough to actually make use of it too, but yea, they can be quite lazy when it comes to anything that is rusted or corroded at all. They don't want to disturb something and cause more work to have to be done like replacing bushings or anything. I don't mind freeing them up though myself, then I know it will be done right and that they can adjust it, and if they try and tell me the same thing again I can tell them to screw because I freed them myself. They are really cooperative there though and we're more than willing to set it to the specs I gave them instead of the factory specs.

Swapped the transmission from auto to manual last weekend. Was running and driving, but it has a few bugs yet.
Speedo doesn't work...I need to get the correct speed sensor, should be an easy fix.
Reverse lights don't work...just need to wire them in.
Vibration under acceleration...found out that the Outback driveshaft isn't the same as the Legacy driveshaft because the carrier bearing sits further down on the Outbacks to correct pinion angles for the dropped transmission and rear diff. Disassembled the driveshaft and swapped the carrier bearing for the one from my AT driveshaft, now its all good.
Car was idling way high initially, then set a code for the IAC (P0505) and would want to stall when clutching in. Adjusted the IAC to bring the idle down, now it idles fine most of the time, but will still occasionally drop the idle too low and stall when coming to a stop.
Sets codes for "AT Diagnostic Input Circuit High" or something like that. I'm using what is supposed to be a 5MT ECU...why is it setting codes for the 4EAT? I don't know.
Discovered today that after 30min or so of continuous speed driving (freeway) the PCM will enact a new rev limiter...at 1500rpm. Idles fine, revs great up to 1500rpm, then hits a fuel cut/rev limiter. Fixed by cycling the key. Haven't gotten out to see if it set a code or not.
If anyone has any insight on those, feel free to share. :)

You need a power washer, engine degreaser (simple green, citrus brite, etc.), stiff brush, and a rubber/plastic sealant (armor-all..etc). Also you need tinfoil to cover the alternator, battery terminals..etc. I dont have the energy right now to do a step-by-step, but this link should help:

Notice to all sticking brake calipers: KNOCK THAT $#!+ OFF.
Ten degrees F outside (okay I was in the garage, but it's not like it's heated) and I spent an hour taking the FR brake apart and regreasing everything, which likely won't help the caliper (the only thing not moving freely). I put new fluid through it, it's all clean, so there's nothing I can do to help it short of rebuilding or replacing it.
I wonder how my fuel economy would improve with all new calipers...

used some fuel injector cleaner to the gas tank today but I still think I have a leaky injector..
I don't know if I understood the guy right on USMB but he was like telling me to pull the injector and look at the spray pattern? I have to take a good guess and figure out they don't spray unless the engine is running right?

Almost got stuck...in a parking lot. Granted, it was a gravel and dirt parking lot that was turned into a foot and a half of mud and snow by this weird weather we're having. I had to rock the car back and forth to get it lined up with the exit and then it was a matter of cranking the wheel left and right as fast as I could to find grip as I revved first gear. I tried my best to crawl, but with out an auto and low range, crawling was useless. My tires are wearing bad because of a leak, so they didn't really give much help. The only way I got out was with EJ25 power, Subaru AWD, and some frantic hands and feet. I could really use an Aussie dual range gear box...

Oh man I had a hell of a time with my steering rack, I actually broke the welded nut on the back side free (thread link (http://www.sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=15820)). You're lucky to have broken a bolt, like people often do with those.

Passenger side or driver's side? My issue was on the driver's side, where the bracket is is recessed into the rack. I had to get parts and go to work, so I drove with just one bolt holding the bracket up into the rack. It was actually very sturdy like that, scary as it sounds. I even threw it around to test it (which is retrospect sounds really dumb) but it was solid. Aren't you glad there's someone senseless to test these things?

yeah the tap was too short, fixed it by getting a huge T handle and i got the thread cleaned/ freshened up although there is some play in the bolt...
the steering rack bushings are in, the oil was changed, catch can emptied tires mounted and torqued.

Brought my car to Town Fair Tire because I couldn't find the leak in my RR tire (they charge little or nothing to repair if you're a customer). Turns out it's got like 3 leaks from age cracks. Stupid of me to have bought 10 year old tires on Craig's List. Maybe I'll run them into the ground anyway, checking the tire daily. I wonder if I can still have a patch put inside instead of plug it, do they still do that? I didn't ask because I was in a rush to go somewhere.
I've been reading Autoblog's ongoing Intro to Ice Racing series, I'm getting pretty excited, may go with a friend sometime. Yes, inside patches are still done at some places but, its a guess of mine that they might turn you down after seeing dry rotted tires.
Today I had some fun doing both valve cover gaskets, PCV Valve, wires, plugs, oil&filter change and both belts on a 99 Forester. I got to drive it about 40 miles round trip, back and forth to the owner and I gotta say I kinda liked it :smt023

Had to ditch my taller than stock winter tires because of dry-rot leaking in one, put my shorter than stock summer tires back on. Did some calculations (http://www.rims-n-tires.com/rt_specs.jsp?showAd=-1) on the benefits of the shorter than stock tires to make myself feel better (see signature).
FR brake is still sticking, check it with my infrared thermometer (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=96451) after some spirited driving and the disk peaked at 540 degrees F, for comparison the FL disk was 230 degrees. The FR tire was also 5 or 6 degrees hotter, I need new calipers or I'm gonna see some abnormal wear I think... I tried flushing the caliper (twice) and putting the piston through its range of motion when I did, there's no freeing it up short of a rebuild. I've rebuilt three of the calipers on my last car, it takes way too long for me, even if it does save $70 or so.
