Took the the seats and center console out of the front and vacuumed my carpet, took the old fabric out of my door cards trying to decide on what type of fabric to replace it with. I then glued a stars subaru logo to my headliner (then thought when i get around to replacing my windshield ill try a diy headliner fabric replacement.
Its a good a time than any to take care of aesthetic issues i have with my car since i have another week to go before my heads get back in... i ran a bunch of stuff through my head about door cards vents and garnishes...even doing a custom rear dash with like a grateful dead tapestry...? My

Just scored a Recaro SE seat from Ben (AKA: RougeBen). That was a hell of a trip. Never driven in NYC before. Honestly, it wasn't as bad as people make it seem. traffic was thick, but as long as you're defensive, but not meek, you'll be fine.

Again, thank you so much, Ben. Can't wait to get this thing into the Brighton!

I didn't do anything to my car either but I added a 91 legacy LS wagon to my driveway.

Boy does this car have issues, but I wanted another project.

Bad headgaskets
Every seal on it leaks
needs rack+pinion
Needs both passenger doors+rocker panel under pass. rear door cut out and replaced
paintjob (not much bodywork all around though) NO RUST WHATSOEVER titled and spent life in new Mexico.
Various trim pieces on inside( carpet and seats are immaculate though hmmm
Needs rear struts
Got a new clutch : ) (saw the invoice from November 2009) car was parked 4 months later.

Whew!
I have a lot of work ahead of me.

Those aren't issues. Those are just the little pleasures of owning a Subaru.

I drove my old one around town today. Surprisingly, it's been holding oil but the power steering pump is now leaking. There was almost zero fluid in the reservoir. After a top off, I took it to Target which houses a huge multi-story car park. The Wagz is so loud that the car-wash workers stopped what they were doing and about three times in a row, it after-fired so loudly that it sounded like a cannon being shot off.

I adore this car!

Car got smashed on the 6th of January. Insurance claim completed on Friday the 11th. I should get my car back I'm hoping this friday or maximum Wednesday next week. I'm ok and was the only one in the car, but the car got a good smaking. Total estimate (including tow truck and car rental while I wait) : $ 9000-10000 CND.

Nothing out of my pocket, but I'm still sad the car got damaged.

Big part of that was my folks leaving too. It's hard to come back when there's no home to come to. My dad was born in heEl Paso too, so there were doubts in the family (both sides) that he'd actually leave, but my folks (still together) left 15 or so years ago and haven't returned. . . .I just have an aunt remaining and a couple friends but that's it, no REAL ties.

^ your going to like the 16g, that's what I run and it's a big improvement over the TD04. I'm running 21psi through mine and it pulls pretty decent, I haven't had it on a dyno yet tho.

today I went and rescued my wife (and my BD) when the upper radiator hose and radiator end tank exploded while she was driving home from work. Apparently between an old radiator, and -20F before windchill, the cold weather wins. So It got a new radiator, and upper and lower hoses, and an engine bay wash.

I tried to get rid of some sluggish behavior in my auto transmission...drained it and put new fluid..noticed other stuff needs replacing as well.

Started popping stuff off my wagon and got a look at the incredibly wobbly shifter it has, sure looks like I'm going to have good fun replacing bushings or just the linkage. Going to be replacing the motor or doing headgaskets pretty soon so I imagine it would be easier when I do that..

It's been a while since I have been around. I have been saving up some money and buying parts here and there. I have a pile of parts in the corner of the garage waiting to go on the car, but I haven't taken much time to work on it. I need a lift to do the transmission swap, so hopefully I can borrow one again soon. I also need to get my new fenders on, take the UEL header off and list it for sale, build my new exhaust, redo the previous owner's terrible door card job, and install the rest of my stereo stuff. I have also decided to stay stock height or possibly lift on some Outback struts.

First, I need to complete the front suspension/steering job. I decided to tackle the ball joints on Friday. Let me tell ya...this is a bitch. I still can't get the lower strut bolt out of the driver's side spindle, so the strut is stuck there. I decided to let it soak even longer with some WD-40, and went to work on the already removed passenger's side. I drilled the bolt out (eff this), and then started opening the cup that holds the ball joint, little by little. Finally, I got it open far enough that the joint popped loose in the cup and would turn...this would allow me to take my grinder to it and cut it up into pieces and remove it that way. I turned the spindle around to do so and discovered I had also cracked the spindle. Where these things crack, there really is no safe way to weld them back (not to mention it's cast, so it's hard to weld anyways). I started searching car-part and found a junkyard willing to ship them to me for a decent price...I can only hope the wheel bearings and ball joints in these are still good. If so, I will be putting in my new inner and outer tie rods, ordering new GR2's for the front, and slapping the whole thing back together when they arrive. Then comes the alignment. Wish me luck...the 6" of snow we got this weekend left me REALLY missing my car.

Edit: A picture of the crack...just because.

I don't have an estimated arrival date on the new parts, so it probably won't be until next week that I get anything more done...I might rent a tie rod tool and knock that out tomorrow, but I dunno. I have been devising an tool to pull the ball joints much easier...looking at a piece of tubing with a 1.8" inner diameter and 1/8" walls...With a 2" wide, 3/4" washer, I should be able to weld the two together, stick it over the end of the ball joint, and then use a nut to pull it out. I'm hoping I won't need to do this at all, but we will see. I also need to do a valve adjustment on Kara's CRV...it's sounding kinda sloppy.

I am about to wash all the salt off that my county loves to put down when its 40 degrees and raining.....If there is a chance of snow, they treat the roads.

At least all you get is salt, we get calcium sprayed on the roads up here and that stuff will cause rot like you wouldn't even believe. I figure just wash underneath the car once a week or undercoat it and it should be good.

Is that what they have been spraying on I-95 and I-395? I have been trying to figure out what those lines were on all of the bridges and overpasses.. At least the towns still use regular salt and sand..

Yeah they call it "liquid salt" but it's actually calcium. They do that in Northern Maine where I used to live and it just destroys cars. I'd rather drive on an icy road then to have to deal with rot. Brand new cars will have rust a year after being on the roads up there. I can't believe CT started using it too..

Around here they do a salt+water mix, salt, or sand depending on who actually treats the roads and if its before or after the snow.

Oh, it has, Navi. it has.

Which brings me to my contribution under the title of the thread:
What did I do today? delivered pizzas in increasingly bad weather. A state of Emergency was declared in Connecticut, starting at 4pm on Friday. we didn't close at Domino's until midnight. THEN I brought someone home, a good 8 miles out into the semi-boonies that we have around here.then I went BACK to the store to finish cleanup. I didn't get stuck once. Then, at 1:30 AM, I get to my own street. in the middle of town.

And they haven't plowed yet. over twelve hours after the snow starts falling, and they haven't touched my road. I have nowhere nearby to leave my car that's not in violation of the parking ban, so I gun it. BAM, hit the mound of plow poop at 25mph in first, and keep it floored. And she's doing great, I'm tracking straight, and covering ground. for about 500 feet. then my car just stops. So, I throw it in reverse, and nothing. spin, spin, spin. drive? nothing, reverse? nothing, first, nothing. rock it? can't.

So, I'll probably have to go get my car out of impound tomorrow.

If the jackasses who plow for my town* don't hit it.

*I don't mean to put down all plow drivers. The state has exemplary drivers around here. My town, however apparently hires people who don't know their asses from a hole in the ground.

You wired it to cut power to the ecu? Or to disable the starter sense wire?

Cutting power to the ecu will whipe its memory everytime you use it..

I set it up to cut power to the E/G IGN SRS AIR BAG fuse. I believe that cuts power to the ignition as a whole, but I'm probably wrong. If it wipes the ecu memory everytime, I'm not really that concerned about it since I rarely have any problems with the car running right and, if need be I can just leave the switch pushed in.

It's great for people living in apartments, condos, places with water restrictions, winter, and so on. I only do a traditional wash if the car's really bad... caked on mud, things that Optimum no rinse isn't designed to handle. During the winter, I pressure wash underneath and in the wheel wells, then handle the rest with optimum no rinse. Make sure you use the two bucket method since a clean wash mitt is a happy wash mitt... and happy wash mitts don't cause swirls or marring.

ElbryanWolf
03-05-2013, 01:48 PM
So wash with one bucket and rince in the other that you change the water more often correct?

Thomistopheles
03-05-2013, 03:10 PM
One bucket water, one bucket with the Optimum No Rinse mix. Clean off your wash mitt in the water bucket before dipping it in the ONR, helps keep it from getting contaminated with grit. Grit guards in the bottom of the bucket are nice to have as well.

Wiping power to the ecu will reset adaptive fueling strategies which causes the ecu to relearn everytime you flip the switch. It can also be an emissions issue with setting monitors and as those monitors wont set, you could potentially have an issue you dont know about. I would wire the fuel pump or starter sense wire instead.

Mine just had some salt deposits on the surface, so I flushed it with low pressure water and used a waffle weave towel to blot it dry. Stains can be handled with diluted all purpose cleaner. Some cars have very fragile insulation... a pressure washer will tear them to shreds and agitating APC with aggressive brushes will wreck it, so be careful.

It was dark by the time I had finished, so I'll get a photo of it tomorrow. It's nothing special, just your typical cluttered BG engine bay

on saturday i had my friends help me with the spark plugs. i did not realize how recessed they were into the bock. its a good thing i did my research before hand. otherwise i would have thought i lost them...lol. i also replaced my knock sensor, which was a pain in the neck with a tighter than tight bolt almost the whole way out. i received my first blood stain on my tools after that, i was proud, sniff sniff...

once i finally started it up and took off toward my house i noticed a slight gain in power around corners that i would normally be stuck at consistent speed. there is also no more delay from a dead stop, at least not from the engine, i still have an automatic, so there is always a delay in shifting.

today i woke up earlier than any other sunday, its almost a new record. i guess i was too excited to stay asleep. i replace my pcv valve, which wasn't as much of a pain as i thought it would be. once that was done i replace my fuel filter, which was much more difficult than expected. i poured out the old fuel but it didn't seem to be bad. i just know it needed to be replaced. started it back up and ta dah! it actually started. i impress myself everyday!

o also on saturday i replaced my right side hydraulic lift on the tailgate. that was a pain in the ass because i did not have the right size tool. it needed a 7/16" wrench but with the rust it was between 7/16 and 1/2. so i had to use an adjustable wqrench. in order for it to fit, i ha to remove my side taillight. getting through the panels and finding the mounting bolts for the taillight was tedious. i was in my car upside down doing things left handed (which proved even more difficult as i felt retarded) and finally got it off. the left side hydro lift was missing when i got the car but when i ordered the part i ordered the wrong one first. i am still waiting for the left side to come in. cant wait...

this is all i needed for now but im hoping to have some upgrades in the future to keep me turing wrenches. im due for an oil change but those are no longer exciting....

Try using a heat gun on it, but lightly so you don't melt a hole in it. It works on the plastic jeep fender flares when they turn gray.

I'm not a big fan of the heat gun method. Works alright on old beaters, but I'd rather use dyes, dressings, and sealants on newer vehicles and customer cars.

What trim stuff would that be, black wow? i've been looking at a couple different ones and that seems to be the one people recommend..The last one I tested and used on my door handles was Chemical Guys New Look Trim Gel. We'll see how it holds up. I've used Black Wow, CG trim gel, Poorboy's World Trim Restorer, Ultima Tire & Trim Guard, and a few dye based products on exterior trim.

Black Wow: I was really underwhelmed by it. It did a good job darkening faded trim, but application was difficult and longevity left much to be desired. It takes a lot of effort to get an even application, and it's too glossy for my tastes. It costs a lot more than other products per ounce, but requires less product per application. Smells pretty good, kinda watermelon-y.

Chemical Guys Trim Gel: This one did a fantastic job darkening the door handles on my scoob. It's a very thick gel, application was nice and even. After letting it soak in and removing the excess it left a very nice matte finish that is perfect for exterior trim IMO, a fresh from the factory look. A little goes a long way. I couldn't pick up a smell from it.

Poorboy's World Trim Restorer: Less darkening than the Black Wow, and a hint darker than Ultima Tire & Trim Guard. Longevity was a bit meh, a couple washes or rain storms will really hammer it. Applies easy. I noticed a bit of streaking after it had rained. The streaking/running was limited to the trim itself, it did not run down onto the paint. It has the right amount of gloss to it, a nice matte sheen. This one has a bit of coconut or pina colada smell to it.

Ultima Tire & Trim Guard: This is the product I would recommend any day of the week. It didn't darken trim as much as some of the other products, but its longevity blew them out of the water... it still looked like it did the day it was applied when the other products were long gone. Very easy and perfectly even application. This one is a fantastic tire dressing as well. You can control the amount of gloss during application to suit your tastes. It has a strong chemical smell. It's nice working with products that smell good enough to eat, but sometimes you just have to deal with it lol.

Sorry for writing a novel in here, guys. Once you get me started on this shit, it's hard to stop.

-- Had the car towed because it stalled out (bad fuel pump). Had it back for a day and...

And far too shiny for something that looks like you could invade a small middle eastern country in.

I got a citation in Florida for a loud/faulty exhaust. On the interstate.

On Friday, while driving through Daytona Beach on 95, a Highway Patrolman merged on in front of me a few hundred yards ahead. At the moment I got near him, I lifted and did what anyone does and stayed behind him at all cost. He put his rear deck lights on for a brief moment and I thought nothing of it but got over in the right lane. I eventually had to get in the left lane to avoid a truck which put me once again right behind him. After the truck was passed, he pulled over to the right lane, slowed down as if he was going to get on the shoulder and let me pass at the speed limit. Instead of stopping, he paces me drops down again and pulls in behind me. We do this for about a quarter of a mile and at one point, I had to put some load on my car to get back up to the speed limit. After that, he passed me again, sits in front of me for some time, drops speed, quickly gets behind me and puts his lights on.

"Your cars too loud. I pull cars over like this all the time".

Can I fight this faulty equipment violation? It's a full exhaust with a factory catalyst and it's registered in TN.

I don't believe so-If your car is reg. out of state-they figure they got you good!

Does it pass inspection in the state it is registered in? If so than it is a legal vehicle in that state based on the valid inspection and I would fight it. Did he use a decibel meter and have valid proof of how "loud" your exhaust is? Of course not because there is no set decibel limit in this country. It is a totally subjective claim based on what he "feels" is too loud of an exhaust. But if it has a legal inspection sticker, than it is his word against a valid legal inspection.

This is a large point that this country really needs to fix. Other countries have set decibel limits at certain RPMS and set distance and height from the exhaust and they are required to check this with a meter and have proof to back up a claim of "too loud". This country has nothing set and is all subjective based on when the last time the cop got a blowjob is and how much badgering his wife and mistress have given him and when the last time his captain yelled at him was. It's all based on profiling of the cars and drivers. Like he said "I pull cars over like this all the time". So basically he profiles people and the cars, pulls them over hoping that there will be something valid to ticket them for (like something outstanding on the license or registration, or something blatantly wrong with the car, or drugs and alcohol) and then not finding anything and just giving some BS excuse to validate them pulling you over.

This is exactly what he was doing. He asked firstly for "the trifecta" of motoring legality which, I kindly presented. He mentioned my cracked windshield but did not cite me for it. I was waiting for him to ask to search my car.

No decibel meter was used and in the good ole' state of Tennessee, there are no vehicular inspections.

Actually, most if not all states have some sort of decibel limit. It also comes down to local jurisdiction.

For example, my state (ct) is 95db. My town is 93db and the lowest in state is 89db (newtown).

Try and find out about the jurisdiction you recieved the ticket in. If their legal limit is 75db or something... you're fucked unless you can get refereed under 75db or prove that he had no means of measuring your exhaust vs the legal limit.

And it doesn't matter where the car is registered and inspected. You have to abide by the laws of the enforcing bureau wherever you chose to travel. Remember.. our shitty government has made it clear driving is a privilege, not a right.

haha. I think he had just washed it before I met him.

Speaking of washing, that's what I did with mine today. Again.
Road salt, if you don't stay the hell off my car... I swear I will murder your entire family. Even innocent little Timmy Table Salt will die.

You need to move man... I got a little salt on my car, but it was washed off by the time I got home. I didnt know they started to salt the pass, but I have only gone over it a couple times this year.

Well, Friday I polished out White Lightnings (BD) headlights and they are looking amazing again! :smt023

Also got a windshield installed in the GT-B and took it to smog... Passed! Should be getting my tabs today! :smt026

Did you ADD an aux port to a head unit, i.e. crack it open and wire in a plug, etc.?

Changed my foglights to SilverStar Ultras to match my low beams and finally cleaned up my driver's side headlight so it matches my passenger side.

Oh yeah, convinced my buddy to by a 2012 OBW instead of the 2010 Jetta TDI he was looking at.

as far as new cars go it choose the TDi. mpg's ftw! and new subarus are thin flimsy plastic and suuper ugly, they look like camrys. older subarus are better than most new cars, just get used and save $ :smt023

Got some of my aux lights to work again. All on one heavy duty switch too!

Now I just need to replace my factory ones as someone smashed into a hill at a bad approach angle and cracked one. Idiot.

The cost of maintenance and ownership kinda outweigh the MPGs. He has a CVT and that thing can get 39 MPG on the highway, if driven right. He was looking for MPGs, but wanted AWD and a slight lift.

Thanks man! They hadn't worked in a while but when they did, the power came in handy while in the mountains at night. But now that I live in Miami, these will probably stay off until someone cuts me off.

The switch is the second to most expensive heavy duty switch I could find at Ace Hardware and the wire is 16-18 gauge I think. Don't quote me on that.

Well it was a couple of days ago but since this is my first day as a member here, I'll list it any way. I changed out the old extremely dirty Fram air filter for a new K&N replacement Air filter (part #33-2154). I could tell the difference right away. My next project... not big but to replace the Spark Plugs since I just got the car and have no idea when that was last done.
