Getting my baby back today. Was in the shop for what started with a CEL and ended up with about 1K of stuff under warranty and almost all my 168000 km service done at 105000 km. All in all 3 days of work, free Impreza Hatch Go-Kart while it's in the shop and only $ 473 bucks to pay for getting it back in top shape. Not bad, but will delay some of the mods I wanted to do. At least it's ready for another 1680000 km ;)

On saturday i prepped the car for winter: replaced valve cover gasket, changed plugs, pcv, went to synthetic oil, fuel filter, air filter, installed very tall stock suspension and threw stock 16's back onto it. now i just need to run some seafoam threw throttle body and gas to clean the fuel/air systems

Huffer
10-11-2011, 09:53 AM
^^ would have made more sense to seafoam before changing your plugs, fuel filter and pcv.

dodik
10-11-2011, 11:50 AM
yeah but time was tight and couldnt find spray bottle. i doubt it will do any harm to plugs, pcv, and fuel filter.

Huffer
10-11-2011, 11:55 AM
^^ ermm... you might want to read the label... the normal process is to have seafoam expunge all the crap and then you have to clean/replace your filters etc.

dodik
10-11-2011, 12:59 PM
i did and have done this before, when adding to crankcase yes you need to drain oil and change filter right away(which i did). when adding to fuel it will not harm your filter. Filters job is to remove debris from fuel, it couldnt care less which mix of fuel is going thru it. for air yes it will dissolve crap in your intake manifold as well as valve seat etc. but all that is going straight to the tail pipe. i dont see how it can cause any ill effect

its a very common occurrence to have a cat leave as the topping to your shit pie, cats are very in tune with their owners and in times of extreme direst they will split to hide till it blows over. your cat will be back, cant say the same for the lady though...
up side, you can change your headliner to something cool and different.

Yesterday, I pulled my fog lights off and broke two of the rusty bolts doing so. They weren't working (assumed they were burnt out) and massively discolored (so I thought). I had to bake my projectors to paint them before I put them on anyways, so I figured i would do the same with these while I was at it.

Apparently, the kid who owned my car before thought it was a rally car and drove it into a mud hole...if you are on this forum, I hate you. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics, again. I dropped my point and shoot into the river while kayaking and I don't like getting the DSLR out for stuff like this.

Last night was spent cleaning the fog lights out. The chrome is pretty trashed, so I sanded all but the reflector and I'm going ot paint them too. The reflectors have some rust and faded chrome, but I'm going to try and salvage them the best I can...they'll do for now, if they will even work with all the corrosion and rust going on in the back. The wire that holds the bulbs in is rusted and broken in one, so I don't know if i can even make them work. The next couple days will be spent masking, painting, and reassembling everything.

Holy crap! I thought mine where killed, but you got me beat! I'm noticing that BD/BG fog lights are common for the crack at the top... I have the same problem. When you put them back together, drill a hole at the bottom for a drain. I did that on mine..

Going to max the rear camber to balance it out a bit, I put camber bolts back there too. I'm oversteering on flimsy stock wagon swaybars, chris'sake! I took in half a truck load of stuff last time with my little Toyota...

dirty wire (with wire insulation, plugs, fuse boxes)- .70 a lb... $25.90
brass (little ay tanks in radiators)- 1.50 a lb... $3
Copper radiators- 1.30 a lb... 37.70 (for 2 radiators, one a subaru)
clean aluminum- .65 a lb... 16.90
cans... lol... -.40 a lb... 1.20
dirty aluminum (has bits of steel or rubber on it)... .35 a lb... 47.92
Stainless steel... .30 a lb... .30 (it was just a little tiny peace of trim)
Catalytic converters... pay per type on cat... $5

Came out to about $135... Took me a day to sort/clean. It's worth it man! I used the money to fill the tank in my GMC and buy a couple dvds... This was 2 weeks ago.. With this and also steel, I have made about $2000 this year and I do this on the side... ;-)

Measured the fender to axle height as per the service manual so I could figure out the proportions I need to pick either 1/4" or 3/8" saggy butt spacers. My measurements make no sense, the rear is the same height as the front with '05 STI suspension, factory the rear spec is lower than the front.

The difference in spec for sedans vs. wagons is 10mm (a little over 3/8") so I think I'll just get the 3/8" for the hell of it.

Apparently you don't value your time?

Instead of spending a day doing all that, I just go to work and and make $150+ for the day. If I put a value of my time the same my boss does, if I spend all day 8(hrs) separating scrap that's $128 worth of my time, so If I get $135 for the clean scrap, I come out $7 ahead...Or I work for those 8 hours, make $128, then scrap the whole mess and get $200....winning. That's the way I look at it.

On the other hand, I couldn't bring myself to bother cleaning/seperating junk. I have thrown away so much useful sellable stuff (running engines, perfect trannies, rust free body parts etc etc etc...over) the years that I didn't want to deal with it's not even funny. the only thing I see a point in separating is cats, in the last 2-3 years I've made $1000+ on cats that people leave at my house when I do an exhaust for them.

I dont spend a ton of time cleaning it like I used to. You got to remember, I dont get a pay check every week. I get paid when I have work. I'm a small business owner that has lots of slow business these days. I take what I can get when I dont have work. As much as I would like to work on my project cars with my down time, I need to make sure things keep paid up, one way or the other. the other thing also, I use this money for stuff I dont need. If you do it a little at a time, it adds up and you got extra money for what ever. Thats the way I look at it....

If I didnt need the income, I would more then likely give it to someone else, but till that day comes, I dont mind. Oh, I did have one trip that was $400+ with one day work...

What are factory BD fender height specs?

The rear is factory shorter b/c the rear fender cut is NOT as tall as the front. That's part of why things they look saggy in the rear.
I think STi suspension has taller springs than WRX but the strut is short like a NON OB legacy/IMPreza, no?

did you camber one max one way and the other max the other way (on the same strut) to double adjust camber?
I have out of camber setup right now b/c of too much lift and want to correct it soon, to not kill tires TOO bad TOO soon.

Please remind me your suspension setup and on what car?
What are factory BD fender height specs?Factory specs for my BK are 385mm front 379mm rear, fender to axle. With the '05 STI setup I'm now at 355mm give or take 1 to 3 all around.

The rear is factory shorter b/c the rear fender cut is NOT as tall as the front. That's part of why things they look saggy in the rear.

thnxSecond set of camber bolts up front; so double adjustable per side. Yeah I maxed the camber for the hell of it, it's fun right now but I'm worried it's gonna bite me haha. Just for the record, camber plates are more reliable, aftermarket style camber bolts can slip under load. It's not a concern for me since you need some pretty sticky tires to put that much load.

After that, I should be done with this and have used eight cans of paint. I also found out my right rear speaker is coming apart.. Poor kenwood speaker.

With my application, the over camber is from lift, mad lift! Your are able to get over cambered, but you're lowere right, so you have to deal with undercamber, yet you can push it to overcamber with two camber bolts/strut?Let's just be clear that when people say 'more camber' they always mean more negative camber (top of the tire goes in, bottom of the tire comes out) since this is the direction of camber adjustment that's beneficial to handling. So you want more negative camber because you lost it when you raised the car, right? You look like you could use some negative camber in the front, rear looks okay.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/

I'm about to wobble out the upper hole out and move it over by tacking a washer on the strut. . .

Doesn't under camber (promoting inner tire wear) handle better on tarmac at speed?Negative camber, yes, absolutely. I don't think there's an argument for positive camber, it would only make the car less stable. I've heard you can have as much as -2.0 degrees camber without tire wear or braking/acceleration traction loss, though that sounds extreme to me, I might say -1.5 degrees is more of a practical limit. Stock up front is just about 0 degrees (+0.3 for Outbacks), and -1.0 in the rear for safety (-0.5 for Outbacks). You'll have to look up what's good for off-roading.

thanks for the ride height specs, I'll cross reference mine to see where I sit over stock :smt023

These have undercoating on them and paint over the undercoating. Reason for the undercoating, the door sills will see the most abuse out of all the trim bits. I knew that the paint would just get scratched, chipped, and then flake off where as the undercoating should be much more resistant to scratching, chipping, and flaking off.

picked her up yesterday from the body shop. bought some wheels put them on today and tried to make them fit.
The rears looks super-wide. Any rubbing?

225s on 9.5"

I get a bit of rubbing but my fenders are rolled. +30 offset. almost maxed negative camber for the fronts and the rears only have as much negative camber the camber bolts can give me.

11-01-2011, 03:51 PM
I think there was a 95 LGT, but it's like the 95 OB, just decals and such... normal L bumpers also with short grill... But then again, I could be wrong... But I dont think so

Huffer
11-01-2011, 03:58 PM
^^ The USDM GT wasn't released until the 1996 Model Year. It came with the DOHC EJ25 and ran on 91 octane. The JDM Legacy did have a turbo'd GT model in '95, a lot of JDMers call it the RS-GT - it was a sedan though, the wagon didn't become a GT until the next year.

My guess is that drft204 has a USDM type BK wagon, with GT dressup mods (note the GT bumper w/out fogs) and the JDM "RS" type grille aka "Shorty". Being from Canada, they have had traditionally easier access to JDM parts than those of us who live south of them.

also test fitted the 225's on the legacy. im going to need some 2mm spacers at least in the rear.

No problems, however it should give you more rear grip, making the car a little more prone to understeer.

I'm thinking that strategy will give more snap (sudden) oversteer. Creating oversteer by making more front grip (spacers, wider tires, more negative camber, anti-lift kit) should be more controllable.

I've read several places that having a stiffer front swaybar actually reduces understeer.

ive had upgraded rear sways and stock front sways on every car ive owned, and i love the way it handles after that, you can still control the oversteer when you do it this way, thats why im doing it the same way on this car.
and i think with the wider stance in back, and more grip in back, as you said, it should be even more controllable, and handle even more perfectly.

Discovered a slow leak in my passenger side front tire. Great. We got snowfall last night though, so it's probably time to switch the 17s out and get the 16s 'Kooks back on.

Installed a used power steering pump. Its from a newer Impreza (GD). Flushed the fluid too.

Do you have the PN? How was the fitment in your car? I need one...

I picked it up from a local with a 04 Impreza RS. So not sure on the number. Fit was a straight bolt up. The lines are where it gets funky. The return line is just a rubber hose so no worry. The other line can be an issue depending on which style (banjo bolt or the metal line that just screws into the unit) you have. Right now my lines are not bolted down. If I mess with them a bit I should be able to get it.

it seems like only spacing out the rear could create some sort of issues, but i havent really heard anything about it. anyone got some good info or advice for me?

I haven't had any new problems yet. I've put about 80 miles on 10mm spacers on the rears of my automatic 96BD.

No problems, however it should give you more rear grip, making the car a little more prone to understeer.

Exactly what I was researching when I tried mine on. And for future mods

And to add to the thread.....

-Installed a non-oem door pocket coin holder from an E36! Yay me!

-My temp gauge doesn't work. Tried switching it with another 1 as the other was sketchy and still nothing. Went to see the sensor, and seen some fluid on it So I'm going to try and troubleshoot that more today and getting a Temp sensor as well as:

some more fluids
tune up parts
cabin filters
brake pads all around

Then find somewhere to do some of this

The only problems i see spacers making is when you hard autocross it. Making the stud distance shorter amd decreasing the strength. I see no harm in running spacers or adapters.

Soul Shinobi

So long as the length of the stud's threaded portion that the nut is grabbing is longer than the diameter of the stud (12mm in our case) you're good.

Awesome, and very temping, just mind the lift-off oversteer! EDIT: If you don't have upgraded or reinforced rear swaybar mounts, consider it, they tear apart with larger bars.

Took my old rusty struts and spring to the dump today (I've installed STI struts and springs). When disassembling them I found that the rear tophats were rusted. Rusted bad. The rear right was nearly rusted though, I tore it apart with my bare hands. Also, only my rear left strut wasn't blown.

Add :

-Replaced my right rear tailight (that was cracked. I got 1 for $25. Not a bad deal.)
- washed:

: Car
: front floor mats.

And detailed it.... again.

Just went over it lightly. I don't drive it alot, so it doesn't take much to clean it up.
